ancient greek foods

In Ancient Greece the people ate foods such as bread, honey, fruits,
olive oil, goat cheese, vegetables, eggs, poultry, and most definitely
fish or seafood.  Along with their meal they would drink a glass of
wine or milk.  The Greeks would eat as fast as they could so they
could have more time socializing and entertaining.

For sometime the rich and the poor people from Ancient Greece
shared the same diet, besides the rich people adding oils and spices to
add flavour to their food. The difference was the rich people could
afford to buy meat and put different oils and spices on their food.
The meats the rich people ate was goat, mutton, pork, venison, hare,
partridges, swans, pelicans, geese, ducks, or songbirds which they
occasionally ate. All the people ate fish such as tuna, mackerel,
whitebait, mullet, anchovies, and various shellfish. The poor people
on the other hand ate olives, figs, salted fish or any fish they could
get their hands on, like bony fish, and meat for religious ceremonies.
They all drank wine or milk.  For information click here.

The land was not very fertile in Greece, but they used irrigation
systems and crop rotation to help grow food.  Almost everybody in
Greece grew olives for olive oil, figs, grapes for wine, other fruits and
vegetables, or kept goats for cheese and milk.  The grains they grew,
like wheat and barley, helped make bread, cakes, and porridge.

The Greeks also had banquets and drinking parties.  The banquets
were for men and women and that was a dinner.  At banquets, people
would as fast as they could so they could have more social time.
Drinking parties were for men only.  The drinking parties is where
the men would hang out and get drunk from wine.

The Greeks were trading partners with Egypt, Sicily, and Scythia.
With their trading partners they would trade olive oil, wine, and
wool.  In addition, the Greeks would receive other foods and luxury
items.  Food in Ancient Athens was a class marker.
