Hi everyone, During the first part of class we will talk about some ways to get more involved in speaking English. You can do this through volunteer activities or clubs. Check out the volunteer websites. Find an activity that sounds interesting. Investigate it and then make plans to go (you don't have to actually go though, it's up to you) by finding out the directions, time, etc. Afterwards tell the class about your event and try to get other people involved by "selling" them your idea. Maybe you can go as a group. or Check out a meeting club. Just a group of people who like to meet other people at events. (use login name serramonteadultschool@hotmail.com password serramonte or Check out a movie club that I found on www.craigslist.org Everyone should give a brief report to the class about what they found and why they like it. The second half of class you and a partner or partners will be required to report on a BBC article. Make sure that all members of the group share the duties equally. You should 1. give some background to the article. This includes a historical perspective and why it is important. (This may or may not be included in your article. You may have to do extra research or talk to other class members.) 2. give a summary of the article 3. present from 3-5 new vocabulary words 4. Give some comprehension questions to the class, to make sure they understand the article. 5. Give some discussion questions for the class. These are questions that are controversial and that different people may have different opinions about. Your job is not to tell the right answer, only to stimulate discussion and be the leader. Each group will have about 15 minutes to give their presentation. The presentations will be taped and viewed later by the teacher with the students involved. Good luck
