I am doing Freshman Basketball for the sports section. I know the starting lineup and all the players personally. I know DS (the coach) very well. The record is 1-5 and they will go 11-5 except maybe a loss to Wakefield. Pledges need to be in by Friday!! Whoever brings in the most money wins 50 bucks!! Coach thinks that brian baumbusch is the best player on the team. Steve Woo is a turnover machine. He played 1 minute last game and turned the ball over 3 times. OHHHHHH NO! I know schedule and all the stats I have access to all game tape and locker room. I will be writing about how the season has come along. What improvements can be made. Also, I will see how the team will rebound after an 0-5 start just like the redskins. Maybe they can bounce back and win 5 striaght you never know. What will the team do now that star point gurad JB OLdenburg is on the team? Will he be able to carry the load and lead the team to a winning record? Also with his 6-3 size what will happen. Also will John Gokey continue his outstanding pressence on the boards? Along with Brian Baumbusch? ----------------------------------------------------------- Why don't you interview the players and the coach? Ask J.B. how he feels about being depended upon to make this team a winning team...you could poll the team...do they think that they can turn around? Team morale isn't always high. You could also interview other MHS students to see what they think of the team. ------------------------------------------------------------ Try to avoid sounding like an advertisement by pumping "pledges," etc. People reading this article will mostly want to know who is on the team, how the team plays, etc. ------------------------------------------------------------ the contreversy could be whether or not people agree with your opinions. The refees of the games and how they call bad plays and the reactions of the player. Are the parents or students watching the game over reacting? ------------------------------------------------------------ I will be interviewing JB Oldenburg (player) Saman Husani (manager) Andrew Burton (fan) I will ask JB What do you think of the season so far? Do you think you guys can rebound from the 0-5 start? What is your offense run around? Do you have a favorite play? If so can you tell us why? What is it like being on a team? I will ask Saman What do you do as a manger? What do you feel the team is up to? Are they good? Who do you think is the best player? I will ask andrew What do you do as a fan to help the team? who is your fav. player? Why don't you play basketball? What do you fell is the reason for there 0-5 start? Will the get into a zone to be able to win? What is the one thing they must chnage you think to win? ------------------------------------------------------------ Freshman Basketball Tyson Colaianni McLean High School is not known for their overwhelming talent of basketball players. They have not won a district title since 1971 and usually have a losing record. Usually all three teams of boy’s basketball at McLean have losing records. McLean basketball has only had three winning seasons in the past 25 years. Once again a new team is here and once again they have a losing record. The freshman basketball team is 2-9, but at one time has a two game winning streak but then lost in a very tough fought game to there arch rival team Langley. JB Oldenburg says, “Even though our team stinks and McLean really has never been good it is still a lot of fun.” The team is led by JB Oldenburg playing point guard but still being the tallest guy on the team at 6-3, Tyson Colaianni at shooting guard, Chris Leibowitz at the small forward, Skyler Jess at the power forward and finally John Goke at the center. JB Oldenburg says, “he is god on the boards and he looks like Waldo.” The team has had to deal with its problem throughout the whole season. At first they had a very good point guard, Lucas Bias but then had to leave the team due to academic reasons. Matt Barba quit the team because of constant bickering with the coach and lack of playing time. Shooting guard Eddie Street also quit because of lack of playing time. One problem that hurt the most was when Brian Baumbusch went down with a broken arm. He was the leading scorer and rebounder and had leadership skills that would always boost morale. Over the winter break JB Oldenburg joined the team. He is an outstanding player. Coach Ferrick asked him at the beginning of the season to be on varsity, he was too overwhelmed by the pressure and decided not to play at all. Three games into the season Oldenburg decided that he wanted to play. The team had a second tryout but conveniently forgot to mention the tryout to the rest of the school. Now, Oldenburg is the starting point guard on the freshman team, which led to the teams only two wins. The team seems to be in a hole after losing to Langley. Before playing Langley the team was on a two game winning streak. McLean came out with a blast and surprisingly they were up by 13 at half time. Once again the teams third quarter woes stepped in. Langley went on a 9-0 run and was in the game. The game was close the rest of the way but David Thompson hit a three pointer from the corner with 2.9 seconds left to go up by three. Oldenburg missed desperation three, and Langley won by three. When asked about what the team has to do to beat Langley again Andrew Burton said, “By not passing as much and letting one player step up.” The freshman basketball has one manager. His name is Saman Huseni he goes to all the games and films them and sometimes keeps the statistics. “ I video tape the games, I fill water bottles, I do the book, that sort of thing,” he said. When asked about the team, “I would have to say that Goke is the best player, he is a beast on the boards and I love his play on the court.” The team looks to wrap up its season on a winning note, they finish off the season with Lee (who they have already beat.), Langley and Madison. The team is 3-10 and looks to be 6-10. Oldenburg said, “We will won don’t worry.” ------------------------------------------------------------ I will be writing about the techno world I will interview: Ray Kang DJ Spinning it backwards Comlumbia records other cd producers ------------------------------------------------------------ T: Can I ask you questions about techno and raving? R: Sure, buddy T: So you listen to techno? R: Yeah all the time T: Oh, cool, who is your favorite artist? R: DJ Spinning it backwards, or DJ Mystik T: Yeah, Backwards is the man, do you ever rave? R: No there usually underground T: Well about the music, do you think it is hard to make techno? R: Yeah, it requires a lot of time and effort T: How much? Do you know? R: No sorry T: What about Jungle compared to trance, what are the differences? R: Jungle is a lot more heavier sounds T: Creepier, would you say? R: Yeah definetly, people tell that when on drugs it is cool but I don't do them becasue it would screw up my bod T: very good once again R: Yeah I know, but I have to be going I have homework T: Thanks so much ------------------------------------------------------------ Raving It’s a Friday night, college students and high schoolers, are off getting ready to go to the new type of party, raves. Across the nation teenagers are going to raves, some to have a good time while others go and do drugs. The drug preferred at raves is ecstasy. Not everyone that goes to raves does drugs as Ray Kang says, “A lot of my friends go but they don’t do drugs so it is all cool.” While Steve Woo says, “Yeah raves are hot and so are the drugs but not for me, only for some people I know, but I don’t hang out with them.” When going to raves its always good to go with at least one person, a group is better incase drug activity is present. At the raves there is dancing, techno music, drugs, alcohol, and much more. Not all of this is good but it brings a lot of different things together not only substances but different types of people also. Countries all over the world are now into raves. Techno music is the type of music that is mostly played at raves. It provides and up beat setting that allows dancers to move in all mysterious ways. The group’s range from soft quick beats to loud slow hoping beats. Some of the group names include DJ Spinning it Backwards, DJ Mystik, and Depeche Mode. One reason why the general public hates the raving scene is because of the loud music, and that the only reason why people are listening to the music is because they are on drugs. In some cases this is true but in most they just like to move, dance and have a good time. Tom Robbs says, “The music is great and that is why I go. I know everyone thinks it’s all about the drugs but when I went to my first rave in Ontario in 1993, I was there for the music and I still am today.” At raves, there are performers or what the people call them, “DJ’s.” Some of the famous international DJ’s include Luke Slater, Dave Angel, Carl Cox, and DJ HMC. What they do is play some of there own mixes, but they also play stuff that the people know and love. Sometimes people go to the raves just because of a certain DJ. They have their own style, which attracts all kinds of people. Techno was introduced in 1989 and then raves started to heat up. All of the raves first took place underground. The events were small, only 300 people while today at some indoor raves there can be up to 3000 people, Woo says, “When I go, there are a lot of people there, it is really crowded, but when on the dance floor it doesn’t seem like that much.” Raving to some is a religion, to some it is an art, others just go to party and to drugs. Raves are a place t have fun listen to techno and get to know some new people while dancing the night away. Just when raving have caution because today’s world as a lot of surprises, just hope that they are for the better.
