CHOLET EXCHANGE UPDATE
AUGUST 3, 2002

Bonjour, les élèves et les parents!  J’espère que l’été va bien!

This is an update to let you know what’s been happening and where we stand.

Important reminders

For those of you who enrolled before April 1:  You should have made a second payment of $200 to NETC by July 1.  Your next payment of $200 is due to NETC by September 1.

For those of you who joined after April 1, your second payment of $400 is due to NETC by September 1.

Number of travelers

Officially we have six students enrolled on the trip.  Sarah Lawlor is the most recent to join.  (Welcome aboard, Ève!)  Sarah and I have been in touch with Farren Peightal, who is considering enrolling.

I sent a letter to all incoming 9th graders who will take French II this year informing them of the trip and inviting them to join us.  So far one person, Jonathan Richmond, has responded and is thinking about joining us.

If any of you know Jonathan, Farren, or anybody else who may be thinking about accompanying us, please see what you can do to help sway their decision.  (In fact, this update is being sent to Jonathan and Farren.  So as you two are reading this, we hope that you will be able to join us.  You’ll love it!)

Request to the School Board

As you already know, I would like to have at least 12 people sign up for this trip.  This is because for every six paying travelers, NETC will pick up the cost for one chaperone, and I prefer to have a second chaperone come with us.  For each participant the cost of the chaperone is reduced.  One possible option, if we have less than 12 people, is to divide the cost of the chaperone among the total number of travelers.  Just so you know, if we have six people, the cost of the chaperone is $2,850 ($475 per person).  If we have seven, the total is $2,542 ($424 per person).  With eight, it’s $2,280 ($285); nine, $1,710 ($190); ten, $1,140 ($114); eleven, $570 ($52).  I hope this option will not be necessary, but I’ll feel a little better if we can reach ten or eleven travelers before having to resort to it.

A second option, if we have less than twelve, is to cancel the trip and try again for 2004.  Of course, I would consult with all of you first before making the decision.

One parent made a suggestion, and I decided to give it shot.  That suggestion is to make a request to the school district to see if they would be willing to help subsidize the cost of the chaperone, either in part or in whole.  The school board has a meeting on Monday, August 5.  I may have an answer soon after.  I’ll let you know.

That’s all for now.  I’ll contact you again in a few days.

Monsieur
