WEEK OF JUNE 1, 2009

Wow!  Can you believe it's the last week of school?  The year has flown by!  I have enjoyed working with your children this year. It is always a pleasure to see the amount of growth sixth graders show from August to June.

Monday is "Even," Tuesday is "Odd," Wednesday is "Flex," and Thursday is an "Even Early Release" day.

This week will be devoted to the FINAL EXAM on Monday (Chapters 9, 10, and 12) and Tuesday (Chapters 7, 8, and 11).  The remainder of the time we will be doing enhancement activities. I will most likely spend some time after the exam Monday reviewing Chapter 8 skills, as the Chapter 8 test results are not as good as I would like.  (Too many students determined that their year is over and, since the work is difficult, if they weren't willing to dedicate some effort to it, they struggled with the concepts.)  Please encourage your child to continue to do his/her best for the remainder of the year, as at least one-third of their term grade will be determined by the Chapter 8 tests and the Final Exam.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

Although students are not allowed to bring backpacks the last week, they should have a folder with PAPER and PENCIL as well as a CALCULATOR for their exam. They can put any work to be turned in in the folder.

Students should have their TEXTBOOKS turned in no later than Monday. Technically, I was supposed to have my textbook inventory in last week, but I wanted my students to have the opportunity to keep their books to help them study if they chose to do so.

Worksheet DD 69 is due Monday.  Also, some students did not turn in the Reteaching worksheets that were assigned in lieu of the Chapter 8 Cumulative Review (and counts as a quiz score).

The Quarter 3 and 4 Tests that were assigned last week as exam review sheets are due on Tuesday. They count as four Intensive Math assignments.

The last day to turn in MAKEUP WORK is Tuesday, although MAKEUP TESTS may be taken on Wednesday and Thursday, if necessary.

EXAM RESULTS should be posted on Pinnacle no later than Wednesday. (I'll try to do it Tuesday evening.) Students who score less than 75% on the exam do not qualify for Algebra Honors in seventh grade.  However, if your child has consistently made A's and B's in GEM, but scores below the qualifying score, you may choose to contact me about overriding the placement.  If you do override the recommended placement, you will need to sign an override letter before school begins next year. Please don't forget that any high school level course will be a permanent part of your child's high school transcript, so make the decision to override carefully.  If you are wavering about your child's placement, please email me or call the school after this week, and I will get back to you.  (I will be working on scheduling at school for a couple of weeks and, since this week is extremely hectic, I will have more time to talk with you then.)

WEEK OF MAY 18, 2009

I will be giving students a copy of my plans for the last three weeks of school on Monday, May 18th, so everyone will know what’s happening and also what to expect in the remaining days.  Included with these plans is an answer key to the exam review sheets, (Quarter 3 Tests Form A and B and Quarter 4 Tests Form A and B), which the students will receive this week.  They will be due on Monday, 6/1, with work required to be shown.  However, we will be going over troublesome problems on Wednesday, 5/27 and after the Chapter 8 tests on 5/28 and 5/29, so students should have done at least Form A of both tests by 5/27 so they can identify the problems they don't remember how to do and get help during the class reviews.

I have not been told when I will be required to turn in my textbook inventory, but textbooks will probably be due no later than Friday, May 29.  This means students will need to use a combination of their notes, previous tests and quizzes, and their exam review sheets to finish studying for final exams (6/1 and 6/2). Another good way to review is to do the Chapter Reviews (which have answers to every question in the back of the textbook).

With so many activities going on, I have told students they must be responsible for finding out and making up things they miss, as I cannot chase them down to be sure they do them. (Several of them still have tests to make up from chapter 7.)  I will be available most mornings before school (not 5/21, 5/22, 5/27, or 5/29), every day except 5/22 after school until 5:30, and during my planning periods (5th and 6th) for any make-up tests they need to take.  Also, many of their other teachers are willing to release them to come to my other classes for missed notes, work, and tests.

Up-coming activities and events that I have been told about are as follows:
Monday, 5/18
BMI Testing during math classes for 6th graders  (approximately 20-30 minutes)
     Beginning Band rehearsal period 3
Tuesday, 5/19
     Beginning Band rehearsal period 4
     Band concert (evening)
Wednesday, 5/20
Band concert 10:00-11:00 for all 6th graders; 9:30-12:30 for band students (possibly longer)
Possibly a meeting for students going on field trip
     Social Studies Showcase 4:30-7:00 p.m.
Thursday, 5/21
Islands of Adventure field trip  (No additional work will be assigned.)
Friday, 5/22
I will be absent, as my husband is having surgery again.  Students will be given time in class to work on exam review sheets and Lesson 8-7 (assigned on Wednesday).
Monday, 5/25
     No school (Memorial Day)
Tuesday, 5/26
Awards ceremony (Time not yet announced)
Thursday, 5/28
     Chapter 8 Test
Friday, 5/29
     Chapter 8 Notebook Test

WEEK OF APRIL 13, 2009

It felt good to touch base with the kids last Friday. We took the opportunity to go over Chapter 11 skills, and no additional work was assigned.  My husband is recovering nicely, so I expect to be back full-time as of next week.  Thank you for all of your thoughts, prayers, and e-mails.

We will be testing Chapter 11 (sections 1-4 only) on Wednesday, 4/15.  Students will need a calculator for these tests (and for the remainder of the year).  On Thursday we will begin our focus on algebraic skills.  These skills are the foundation for Algebra I.  It is imperative that students give their best efforts to the work they will be doing in this final quarter.  Success in these last two chapters is a necessary prerequisite for placement in Algebra I.  Students who struggle this term will not be recommended to continue in the GEM program.

The school-wide "Creative Career Projects" are due to fourth period teachers on 4/13.  Information has been distributed through several school-wide activities.

Sixth graders will be screened for scoliosis on Friday (more information will be forthcoming).

WEEK OF MARCH 30, 2009

Well, the good news is that things are somewhat better.  My husband is out of the hospital, but he is still in need of my care.  I will be out of school most, if not all, of this week, but expect to be back after Spring Break.
Students will be given the Chapter 11 packet tomorrow and I have left notes for them in hopes that they will be able to do the work without me.  However, I will definitely take time after Spring Break to be sure the concepts are clear to them.  We are only doing the first four sections in the chapter.  These concepts will not be tested until after I return and review them with my students.
I wish all of you a great Spring Break!

Monday, 3/30 is a "Flex Day."
Tuesday, 3/31 and Thursday, 4/2, are ""Odd Days."
Wednesday, 4/1, and Friday, 4/3, are "Even Days."

Plans for the week are as follows:  I recommend students have a calculator for this chapter.  It may be a simple four-function calculator but, as they will be studying irrational numbers, they will need a square root key.

WEEK OF FEBRUARY 23, 2009

Be sure to sign and return your child's interim report. (They were distributed on Thursday, 2/19.)

At the last meeting of the Middle School Math Department Heads we were told that students will be allowed only the use of FCAT type (four function) calculators for the algebra exams next year.  This is so that they retain their ability to perform operations with rational numbers (fractions) and use the correct order of operations. It would be helpful for students to have an inexpensive four-function calculator to use so they can become familiar with its features.

We will continue to progress through the Pre-Algebra program while we prepare for the FCAT test on March 10 (Reading) and March 11 (Math). Please encourage your child to take these FCAT review activities seriously, as we want them to maintain their high levels of achievement.

2/19  GREAT NEWS!!
I was concerned about the amount of time some of the chapter 10 work was requiring, so I asked our District math leaders about the exams and how this was going to be handled.  I was told that students WILL be allowed to use calculators on their second semester exams.

Therefore,  I am telling students today that they may use a calculator for the arithmetic of their problems, but they must show the problem they must do to solve the problem.  For example, they write the formula, replace the variables with the parts of the figures, then use the calculator to do the math.  This should make the surface area and volume problems easier to deal with.

Students should bring a calculator to school from now on.  It is preferable that the calculator be scientific, but it does not have to be fancy.  Even a simple four-function calculator will work.

Students will be allowed to finish and/or correct Lesson 10-5 tonight and, depending on their level of confidence, may or may not have to do Lesson 10-6 on Friday.  (If I change the plans, they will have an alternate assignment to reinforce the concept of surface area.)

  Have a great weekend!

WEEK OF FEBRUARY 2, 2009

Monday, Wednesday, and Friday are "Even Days."
Tuesday and Thursday are "Odd Days."

VOCABULARY TEST WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 4
CHAPTER 9 TEST AND NOTEBOOK TEST THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 5

Chapter 9 quizzes will be returned on Monday.  Overall, the results were disappointing, especially since we spent extra time on the concepts, did two "sample" quizzes, and reviewed the other concepts prior to the quiz.  Students must spend time concentrating on vocabulary and specific features of the geometric figures.
The vocabulary test has three sections.  The first is strictly symbols.  Students will be asked to write the symbols for the words, such as perpendicular, that we have studied in this chapter.  The second is very much like the quiz, where they will be required to pick the most specific description of something such as a pair of angles identified in a diagram.  The third part is a matching of definitions, with a word bank provided. This test will count like a chapter test.

PLANS FOR THIS WEEK INCLUDE:

Monday, 2/2
  Warm-Up: PowerPoint Lesson Quiz
  Check for Completion/Review:  Lesson 9-8
Notes and Do:  Lesson 9-9 (Symmetry and Reflections)

HISTORIC WEEK OF JANUARY 19, 2009

Hopefully, you are as caught up in the activities of this weekend and this week as I am.  What a great time for America!  Our classroom television will be tuned in to CNN all day tomorrow, as there is no math concept more important than this historic day.

  Tuesday is a "Flex Day."
Wednesday and Friday are "Even Days."
  Thursday is an "Odd Day."

Students should be cleaning out their notebooks, saving notes, references, old tests, and any work they would like to keep.  They should replenish their supplies of pencils and paper, as well as graph paper, which will be utilized at the end of our current chapter.

Since chapters seven and eight consist of intense algebraic skills, none of which are tested on the FCAT, we will follow the suggested Pacing Guide and study chapters nine, ten, twelve, and parts of eleven this quarter.  Also, since I was disappointed in the results of the chapter six tests and of the exam, we will be doing a significant amount of review work this term.

The key to success in chapter nine will be knowing the vocabulary.  We will be doing several activities to reinforce the vocabulary in this chapter, but students should try to learn a few words each day.  There will actually be a separate vocabulary test for this chapter.  The vocabulary words are listed on the back of the study guide.  The words will also be introduced in class lessons.

  Plans for this week include:

Tuesday, January 20
  Viewing of Inauguration Coverage

Wednesday, January 21
  Warm-Up Activity:  Reading Math
Notes and do:  Lesson 9-1 (Points, Lines, and Planes)

Thursday, January 22
  Warm-Up Activity:  Geometric Terms Crossword
Check for Completion/Review:  Reading Math, 9-1
Notes and do:  Lesson 9-2 (Angle Relationships and Parallel Lines)

Friday, January 23
Warm-Up Activity:  Angle and Triangle Word Search
  Check for Completion/Review:  Crossword, 9-2
Notes and do:  Lesson 9-3 (Classifying Polygons, Angles of Polygons)

JANUARY 13, 2009

Just want to touch base and explain something I did with grades...  Initially, I wanted the exam review activities emphasized so that students would do them, so I counted them as significantly more points than ordinary homework assignments.  However, I realized that students who have done their work all along were actually being penalized, as their bonus work didn't raise their grades as much when the total number of possible points was higher.  Because of this, I lowered the value of the exam review assignments to compare more reasonably to regular assignments.  For a student who has done all of the proffered bonus assignments, the results of these changes raise the maximum possible bonus percentage points (on the term grade) from 3.5% to 5.6%.

Mid-Term exam scores will be posted soon.  Remember, I do not feel a student should be removed from this program based solely on a low exam score, as this is the first exam they've ever taken.  However, a low score is a wake-up call to remind students that their final exam score needs to be at least 75% and they will have to prepare differently or more thoroughly.  Students who are really working hard and still struggling on more than the exam may want to consider a move to Advanced Math, but it won't hurt them to remain in GEM for the remainder of the year.  They will benefit from the exposure to this work, and I won't allow them to "fail" the course if they are truly trying.

According to District policy, the exam is a "secure" test, and may not be sent home or removed from the classroom. Parents who wish to view the exam must set up an appointment to view it at school.

No additional math assignments will be made until next week.  Students should use their time relaxing and preparing to begin a new term by cleaning out their notebooks, filling up their binders with notebook and graph paper, and getting a new supply of pencils.

As per the District Pacing Guide, we will postpone chapters seven and eight until after the FCAT, as these chapters consist mainly of algebraic topics that are not tested in sixth grade.  The chapters we will be doing this term (nine, ten, twelve, and parts of eleven) cover geometry, measurement, data analysis and probability.

  Have a nice long weekend.

      H A P P Y   N E W    Y E A R !

I hope this finds everyone healthy and rested.  By now your child should already have completed some, if not all, of the exam review activities.  They are due on Monday, January 5. Answers are included so students can check their work.  These activities will not be accepted if work for the problems is not shown and turned in with the packet.
The next seven school days will be very intense, but students will then get a reprieve for about a week.  Please encourage your child to stay focused and committed until exams are complete.  Remember, by District policy, the exam score must count as 25% of the Term II grade.

Tuesday, 1/13
Mid-Term Exam Part Two (Chapters 4-6)

Wednesday, 1/14
Plans will be finalized at a later date, as band students will be missing classes all day for concerts.  Tentatively, I plan to introduce modular arithmetic after students finish their exams and delve into the
packet, "Circular Patterns in Modular Multiplication."   We will continue these activities in class Wednesday and, perhaps, into the following week.  They are particularly interesting because they produce artistic patterns, some of which are identical.  The trick is to determine which mathematical properties cause some of them to be alike and others to be different. Once these
properties have been determined, students will be able to tell which multipliers will produce identical patterns in any modular system.

Thursday, 1/15
  School-wide Early Release Activity

Friday, 1/16 (No school)

Monday, 1/19 (No school)

Tuesday, 1/20 (Plan on watching the inauguration)

         V E R Y   I M P O R T A N T !!!

STUDENTS WILL BE RECEIVING SEVERAL PACKETS OF WORK THIS WEEK TO HELP THEM REVIEW FOR THEIR EXAMS.  THESE ARE DUE WHEN THEY RETURN FROM THE HOLIDAYS.  TO RECEIVE CREDIT, ALL NECESSARY WORK SHOULD BE SHOWN (USUALLY ON A SEPARATE PAPER) AND ATTACHED TO THE ACTIVITIES.

Since we will not have time to go over every problem in class, answers to these activities will be provided, including some solutions completely worked out.  This way, students can check their work, identify problem areas, and ask questions in class about these problems only.

PLEASE SET ASIDE TIME FOR THESE REVIEW PACKETS.  YOU KNOW YOUR CHILD AND YOUR FAMILY SCHEDULE.  I WOULD PREDICT THAT IT WILL TAKE ABOUT FIVE HOURS OF WORK TO COMPLETE EVERYTHING.  PLEASE PLAN ACCORDINGLY SO YOUR CHILD GETS THE FULL BENEFITS OF THESE PACKETS AND ISN'T CAUGHT TRYING TO COMPLETE A LOT OF WORK AT THE LAST MINUTE.

The holiday packet that can be found on the Nova Middle School website may be downloaded and completed for ten extra credit points.  We will not be going over this packet until the beginning of Term 3.  However, if it is turned in before the end of the second quarter, it will be counted towards the second quarter grade.  Otherwise, it will count for the third quarter.

*******************************************************

Plans for this week include:

Monday, 12/15
  Warm-Up:  overhead problems

Tuesday and Thursday are "Even Days."

The Winter Packet (a school-wide initiative for FCAT preparation) is available on the Nova Middle School website.  The completed packet is worth ten bonus points.  However, due to the emphasis on the semester exam, I would prefer students to put their efforts during the holidays into the exam review materials they will be receiving next week.  The Winter Packet may still be completed for bonus points, but it will not be due until January 20.  Students who turn it in this term will earn bonus points for Term II; otherwise, the points will be added to Term III.

WEEK OF DECEMBER 1, 2008

Monday, Wednesday, and Friday are "Even Days."
Tuesday and Thursday are "Odd Days."

STUDENTS WILL NEED THEIR WORKBOOKS FOR CHAPTER 5.  (MOST OF THEM ARE ALREADY IN THE CLASSROOM.)

Interim Reports will be distributed Monday, 12/1.  The Chapter 4 test scores are included in this report. (They were posted on Pinnacle today... 11/30...about 6:00.)

There will be two more major test scores (Chapters 5 and 6) as well as a Mid-Term exam score to influence the second quarter's grades.  The exam dates are Monday and Tuesday, January 12-13.  Chapter 5 will be tested next week and chapter 6 will be tested the first week in January.  I will be distributing materials for students to utilize to help them prepare for the exam over the Winter break.

Students must stay committed to their math as we move forward in the curriculum.  The skills we will be learning must be mastered for them to progress in the remainder of this program and in algebra next year.  Students must make math a priority to experience success.  Please monitor your child's progress.

The Medieval Times trip is Friday, 12/5. Unfortunately, due to time constraints, students who participate in this trip will be missing work on that day.  However, it will not be that difficult to make it up, as they should already be somewhat familiar with the concepts taught in section 5-5.  Although the schedule has not yet been posted, I am also anticipating absences this month due to rehearsals and concerts.  We will work around these activities as much as possible, but students will have to take responsibility for any work they miss. As a former band student, I have many memories of such activities and the efforts required to keep up with classwork.

WEEK OF OCTOBER 20, 2008

Monday is an "Odd Day."
Tuesday is an "Even Day."
Wednesday is a "Flex Day."
Thursday is an "Even Early Release Day."
Friday is a Teacher Planning Day.

I spent much of this weekend grading tests and I must admit I am disappointed in the results.  I will be sending these tests home with the students on Monday and entering them in Pinnacle as soon as I finish this up-date.
When I graded the notebook tests, I saw why the test results were not up to par.  The notebook test is designed to indicate whether or not work has been completed, directions for showing work have been followed, work has been checked, and mistakes have been corrected.  Students who don't understand their mistakes are supposed to ask questions in class the next day.  Even though I check to see if work has been completed on a daily basis, I do not penalize the students for not following directions until the notebook test, as they are allowed to fix their mistakes.  However, there is really no reason for any student to miss problems on the first part of this test and no one should get a grade lower than a B on it.  However, some kids obviously used the self check to just write in answers.  Some even went to the trouble to copy the problems first in their homework, but that didn't help them learn the material.  Some took for granted that they knew the material and never took the time to check their work.  When you see the notebook test, a "D" in a space indicates directions were not followed, even though they were modeled in the class notes and written on the study guide.  Students not only missed these problems on this test, but also lost three out of four points on the homework assignment.  An "X" or a circled answer indicates that the answer is wrong.  These problems were either never checked, or the work was not corrected.
I will have a lengthy discussion with the students about these procedures and we will decide if we can continue doing things this way.  Sometimes these lessons are difficult, but important ones to learn (for me, as well.)  The good news is that this is a good learning experience; the bad is that there is no time to do much to raise low grades before the end of the term.  There are very few students in these classes who don't belong in this course, but there are quite a few who need to improve their work habits and get more serious about their learning.  Please assist us by monitoring your child's work.

There will be a pep rally Monday at 3:30 to kick off our PTSA fund raiser. Don't forget to bring new or gently used books for underprivileged children.  These books will be collected at the door of the pep rally and all week in the PTSA office.

Students received their chapter 2 quiz results Friday.  We spent significant class time reviewing these quizzes, as I felt too many careless mistakes were made.  Students were warned that they can expect another quiz on the same material at any time, as these skills lay the groundwork for much of what we will be doing this year.

WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 29, 2008

Monday and Thursday are "Odd" days.
Wednesday and Friday are "Even" days.
Tuesday is a holiday (Rosh Hashanah).

We did not do 2-3 on Friday.  Instead, students did Activity Sheet 40 and were given their chapter one tests and an up-dated average on Friday.  We spent quite a bit of time reviewing the tests and looking at things that are expected of students in order for them to do well.  Many of their mistakes are careless, or they are caused by rushing through the tests without really thinking about the problems and their responses.  These skills should improve as students experience more opportunities to think in this manner. If your child's scores were not as great as expected, please do not panic.  However, it is the time to examine mistakes and the reasons for them.  We will continue to work on these skills.  Students will have many additional opportunities to raise their grades.

Some of you have asked about the notebook tests.  They are given to see that students have actually followed the procedures for written work, that is, they have completed the assignments according to the directions on the Study Guide, they have checked the work for accuracy using the self-check, and they have corrected their mistakes.  (They must also keep their work in an organized manner, as they will be using it to study for semester exams.)  A "D" in a question box means that the directions for the assignment were not followed.  Students lose credit for that problem on the notebook test as well as some of their homework points.  If they missed a problem and had the wrong answer, it tells me they did not check their work very carefully.  Too often they make similar mistakes on tests and quizzes.

Please sign the tests so that I know you have seen them.

Plans for this week are as follows:

MONDAY, 9/29
  Warm-Up:  Overhead problems
  Check for Completion/Review:
Activity Sheets 29, 40 (given Friday)

September 12:  We did Activity sheets 31 and 11 instead of 11 and 12 today.  Quiz results should be available on Pinnacle this weekend and the actual quizzes will be returned on Monday.

WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 15, 2008

Monday, Wednesday, and Friday are "Odd" days.
Tuesday and Thursday are "Even" days.
Interims will be sent home on Thursday.  Please note:  GEM Chapter One tests will be given on Friday, 9/19. (See notes below for preparation hints.) Since these tests are a large part of your child's grade, be sure to check Pinnacle early the next week to see a more representative grade for your child than the one shown on his/her interim report for GEM.  Intensive Math grades will be accurate, as the Spirolateral packets and the Spirolateral quiz are being graded at the beginning of the week.

Plans for the week of 9/15 are as follows:

MONDAY, 9/15
    Warm-Up:  Activity Sheets 12 and 32 (Subtracting
              Integers)

Study and prepare for Chapter 1 Test and
         Chapter One Notebook Test tomorrow.

FRIDAY, 9/19
    Warm-Up: None
    Check for Completion/Review: Chapter Review,
                                 Vocabulary Activity
    Chapter 1 Test
    Chapter 1 Notebook Test
Homework:  Chapter 1 Cumulative Review (This counts
               as a quiz score.)

TO PREPARE FOR THEIR CHAPTER TEST STUDENTS SHOULD DO THE CHAPTER REVIEW AND CHECK IT (ALL ANSWERS ARE IN THE BACK OF THE TEXTBOOK).  THEY SHOULD ALSO REVIEW THEIR NOTES, THEIR WORK,  AND THE QUESTIONS THEY MISSED TO BE SURE THEY KNOW WHAT THEY DID WRONG.  SINCE THEIR SELF-CHECKS INCLUDE ANSWERS TO ALL OF THE PROBLEMS, THEY MAY PICK RANDOM PROBLEMS FROM THE CHAPTER PAGES AND TRY THEM TO SEE THAT THEY UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPTS.

TO PREPARE FOR A NOTEBOOK TEST STUDENTS SHOULD BE SURE THEY HAVE ALL OF THEIR ASSIGNMENTS FROM THE STUDY GUIDE COMPLETED, CHECKED, LABELED, AND CORRECTED.  TO MAKE IT EASIER FOR THEM TO ANSWER QUESTIONS FROM THEIR NOTES, THEY SHOULD ALSO READ THROUGH THEIR NOTES SO THAT THEY WILL HAVE A BETTER IDEA OF WHERE TO LOOK WHEN THEY SEE A QUESTION ABOUT, FOR EXAMPLE, DIVIDING INTEGERS.

___________________________________________________________________________________________

WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 1, 2008

   Monday is a holiday.
Tuesday, 9/2 and Thursday, 9/4 are "Even" days.
Wednesday, 9/3 and Friday, 9/5 are "Odd" days.

OPEN HOUSE IS THURSDAY, 9/4 FROM 6:15-8:15.  Due to the construction and Nova/Davie Community School classes, parking spots will be at a premium.  Please arrive early to secure one.  I'm looking forward to meeting all of you.

By now your child has probably shown you a spirolateral.  These are spiraling designs drawn on a coordinate plane according to a sequence of numbers.  Essentially, they are complex mathematical concepts disguised as art! Students were excited when we began these enhancement units last week.  We will continue working in the spirolateral packets as we begin our textbook work this week. The packets and the designs made, as well as a quiz on the concepts taught in the packet, will be part of their Enhancement ("Intensive Math") grades.

I will be recording the scores of the two diagnostic tests students took last week on Pinnacle today.  We are required to give these tests; the data they provide is   very helpful.  An item analysis tells me which skills need extra reinforcement or background preparation before program objectives are taught.

Please understand that these scores are strictly diagnostic; THEY DO NOT COUNT AS PART OF YOUR CHILD'S GRADE.  It is also important that you do not read too much into their results.  Students are not expected to do well on them (the average score was about 50%).  Some students do score well, but high scores are not necessary in order to be successful in this class.  They are also not necessarily an indication that a child will do well in the program, as solid work habits and desire produce more success than innate ability.  The same tests are taken in May, when the scores do count, and most students do very well.

PLANS FOR THE WEEK OF 9/1:

TUESDAY, 9/2
  Review:  Spirolateral classifications
Warm-Up: Spirolateral packet #6-9 (The Dimension  Rules)
Distribute Study Guides and Study Guide Directions
Notes and do Lesson 1-1 (Variables and Expressions)
(This is due Wednesday; see Study Guide for specific assignment and directions.)

WEDNESDAY, 9/3
Warm-Up: Activity Sheet 35 (Algebraic Expressions)
  Check for completion/Review:  1-1 assignment
Notes and do Lesson 1-2 (Order of Operations)
(This is due Thursday; see Study Guide for specific assignment and directions.)

THURSDAY, 9/4
Warm-Up:  Activity Sheet 1 (Order of Operations)
  Check for completion/Review: AS 35, 1-2 assignment
  Spirolateral packet:
     Order Rules
     #s 10-12
     Introduction to Modular Math Systems
No specific homework due to Open House

FRIDAY, 9/5
Warm-Up:  Activity Sheet 2 (Order of Operations)
Check for completion/Review: AS 1, Spirolaterals

___________________________________________________________________________________________

WEEK OF AUGUST 25, 2008

Monday, 8/25 and Thursday, 8/28 are "Even" days.  Wednesday, 8/27 and Friday, 8/29 are "Odd" days.
Tuesday, 8/26 is a Teacher Planning Day.  Monday, 9/1 is Labor Day (no school).

If you have not already read the "Welcome Letter" I sent home on Thursday, please do so as soon as possible and return the last page to me.

Don't forget to purchase your Dolphin game tickets.  All of the funds raised by this project will benefit our students.  Best of all, after Saturday night, it appears that the Dolphins are actually going to be worth watching this year!

Thanks to Tropical Storm Fay, we didn't get a lot accomplished last week, but we did take care of some of the general preliminary activities, including setting up our notebooks.  This week we will be interrupted for mandatory fire and tornado drills, as well as grade level assemblies, so we might not get too deeply embedded in our curriculum until next week.

Plans for this week include two diagnostic tests.  Although the results of these tests will not be used to determine student grades, they will provide me with data concerning the strengths and weaknesses of my students so that I can plan instruction and activities accordingly.  The results will be posted on Pinnacle no later than next weekend.

Textbooks will be distributed this week, and we will be examining their features so that we can take full advantage of their contents and related sites.

Students will be given their first opportunities to see how our "Math by Design" worksheets are done, as these will be assigned for when they finish their diagnostic tests.

NOTE:  If I actually distribute study guide packets and make an assignment this week other than the design worksheets, I will notify you here.  Expect more detailed lesson plans beginning next week.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome to Nova Middle School!  I can't wait to meet all of you!  Here is a list of supplies for our math classes.  You will need to bring your math binder to class every day.

SUPPLIES FOR GEM AND GEM INTENSIVE MATH CLASSES

1)  One three ring binder  (I recommend a 1 or 1 1/2 inch “slant ring” or “D -ring” binder, as these hold more than traditional binders.)

OR....if you tend to throw things into your backpack and then are unable to find or recognize them, you may prefer to use a spiral notebook with at least two pockets.

2)  Dividers (pack of 5)

3)  Wide or college ruled notebook paper  (white or any color)

4)  Graph paper  (plain)  You will need this for our first unit of work.

5)  Pencils  (#2 or mechanical)  and a good eraser

6)  Set of colored pencils

7)  Highlighter(s)

These things are not necessary, but you may wish to have them:

Spiral notebook (just for your notes)

Ruler (with both inches and centimeters)

Reinforcements (in case something tears out of your notebook)

Things you will need during the second half of the year:

Scientific calculator--preferably with a fraction  (Ab/c) key

Protractor  (compass is optional)

Classroom Wish List:

tissues      hand sanitizer

I am looking forward to meeting all of you.  Enjoy the rest of your vacation.
