COURSE EXPECTATIONS: MRS. DONNA PHILLIPS – GEOMETRY 1) Required Material A. Textbook – must be brought to class every day B. A pocket folder or 3 ring binder, with loose-leaf paper. This is for math papers only. A spiral notebook – for math only. This is for class notes, practice problems and homework. C. Pencils with erasers. D. Red Pen. E. TI-84 (or TI 83) calculator. 2) Classroom Policies and Procedures A. Be on time. B. Absolutely no writing on desks. C. A learning atmosphere will be maintained by all present. D. Ask questions if you don’t understand the material. E. Form study groups. F. Get extra help in the Math Lab. (Room 239) 3) Homework Policy A. All homework is to be done in a notebook that is kept just for Geometry. Start each assignment on a new sheet of paper. Put page number, problems assigned, name and date in the upper right hand corner. Copy the essential parts of the problem and/or diagram and show all work. B. Check all odd answers in the back of the book. If correct, mark it as such (C). If incorrect, try to fix it. If you still don’t get it, mark with a red X and ask about it in class the next day. C. All homework must be corrected. D. Homework must be done in pencil. It must be neat, mistakes erased and worked from the top to bottom, not side to side. E. All homework should be saved for possible collection or homework quizzes. It will also be used to study for quizzes and tests. F. Keep up with daily assignments to prevent getting lost, behind, frustrated, depressed and/or anxious. 4) Evaluation/Grades A. Homework – counts for 20% of your grade. It will be graded through notebook checks, random collections and homework quizzes. Homework MUST be corrected. B. Classroom Participation/Agenda – counts for 5% of your grade. 1. You will receive 2 points a day if you have all your required materials and are participating the entire class. 2. You will lose 1 point for each of these: you come to class without your supplies, homework, are not taking notes, are working on an assignment from another class, or are at all disruptive during class. 3. Daily use of the agenda is suggested by the school. Homework and reminders regarding tests and quizzes should be written in your agenda. C. Quizzes and Tests – will count for 75% of your grade. 1. Quizzes are both announced and unannounced. They can be worth anywhere from 10 – 50 points. They will usually cover only 1 or 2 sections of a chapter. 2. Tests are always announced 1 - 2 days in advance. They are worth 50 – 125 points. They cover a whole chapter or a major portion of a long chapter. D. Grades are averaged using the 3 categories above. 1. The school grading scale is used. 2. Individual progress can be checked on the web. 3. Semester grades are a combination of two quarter grades (40% each) and a semester exam (20%). 5) Attendance/Absence A. You are responsible for any work missed while absent. Be sure to keep up with the homework. Assignments will be posted on the web. B. Tests are announced in advance. If you are absent the day before a test or on the day of a test, you will be required to take the test the day you return. C. If you are absent, If absence is due to a field trip or vacation, you must let me know ahead of time. Homework must be completed and turned in when you return. 6) Teacher Availability A. I am in the building from 7:40 – 3:30. B. Math Lab is open from 7:20 through Period 8.
