Hey there, Voyagers! We begin the second semester with a trip to North and East Africa. What do you know about this area of the world? What do you want to know? What is the "Horn of Africa?" How can a person in a region near the equator get frostbite? Where is Morocco? How are Muammar Al-Qaddafi and Osama bin Laden alike? How were the pyramids of Egypt built? Who is endangered in East Africa? Where is it all in relation to Abu Dhabi and Kabul? How would we get there from Jerusalem's Old City? Let's take the steps together to discover the secrets of North and East Africa... 1. Check the due date for your maps and vocabulary. Study for the tests. Don't forget these locations.... POLITICAL MAP Western Sahara El Aaiun Morocco Rabat Casablanca Marrakech Algeria Tunisia Tunis Libya Tripoli Benghazi Egypt Cairo Alexandria Luxor Port Said Giza Sudan Khartoum Eghiopia Addis Ababa Somalia Mogadishu Eritrea Djibouti Uganda Kenya Nairobi Tanzania Rwanda Burundi PHYSICAL MAP Altantic Ocean Canary Islands Mt. Toubkal Strait of Gibraltar Atlas Mountains Sahara Desert Ahaggar Massif Mt. Tahat Mediterranean Sea Gulf of Sidra Libyan Desert Suez Canal Red Sea Nile River Did you look below and see the free dictionary you can download to define these words? Try it. It works with both Internet Explorer and Netscape and you can use it with other web pages to expand your vocabulary. Meanwhile, define and learn these vocabulary words: erg hammada diffusion fellahin bazaar caravan distributary ecology Maghreb phosphate Berbers desert pavement Use the links to hieroglyphics web sites to help you do your carthouches, due March 6th. So far so good. Now we know, at least, where we are and what surrounds us. What else do you want to know? Funny that I should ask, since that will be our next step: to research the answers to questions about North Africa. To see a list of sample questions about North Africa, click on the link below that is described as "North Africa Questions." (Whoa! What a coincidence!) Keep thinking about your thinking. What are you thinking? More later....Keep up the good work! Ms. G.
