Senior year is finally here and it will go by really fast so stay on your toes and meet all of the deadlines. Not only will you be busy with so many activities associated with school, but you also have many decisions to make about your future.  I will do my best to keep you up to date on any information about scholarships, college fairs, visitation days, etc, etc.etc!!! However, please REMEMBER that it is YOUR RESPONSIBILTY to complete applications and return them in a timely manner.  I will use newsletters to let you know about any opportunities that come to my attention ( be sure to check the bulletin boards, my Quia website) YOU need to be searching for information on schools, scholarships, etc. on your own NOW.  Don't wait until it is to late! Feel free to come by if I can assist you in anyway.  Remember to involve your parents/guardians or other mentors as you make your decisions about your future.  Share this information with them and seek their advice and input in your decision-making process.  HAVE A GREAT SENIOR YEAR!!

Sept.17-21: Monday-Math, Tuesday-Reading, Wednesday-Language, Thursday-Social Studies, Friday-Biology

Cram sessions will be  the week before the exam.

New requirements for photo identification are in place for the ACT this year. Check their websites for more information on what is required.
There are fee waivers in the counselor's office for those who qualify.

SELECTIVE SERVICE RESISTRATION: Males who are 18 years of age MUST with the selective Service System.  Register at www.sss.gov. You must be registered to qualify for federal financial aide as well as for financial aid at most colleges.

                                        COLLEGE VISITS
If you are planning on attending college, you should be narrowing your choices down to 3 or 4 schools.  Most schools now have applications and scholarship applications availale online.  You should also schedule an appointment to visit, preferably on weekends since you only get one excused visitation day.

                                         College Fair
Dekalb County College Fair will be Oct. 4 at the Dekalb County Coliseum in Rainsville. We will travel there on buses. Travel permission forms will be passed out at a later date.

Birmingham National College Fair will be held Sunday, Sept. 16 from 1-4pm at the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex, North Exposition Hall in Birmingham, AL Admission is free. You can meet representatives from colleges and universities from throughout the country and get information on admission requirements, financial aid, testing, college majors and more.

                                      SCHOLARSHIPS
Wendy's High school Heisman (www.wendysheisman.com) has opened the door for any senior student-athlete to apply for the Wendy's High School Heisman Awards Program. the award honors male and female high school students who excel in academics, athletics, and student leadership. Applications must be completed and submitted no later than 5:00 pm on Oct. 2, 2012 Reviewers must submit their review no later than 5:00 pm on Oct. 4.

FINANCIAL AID: FAFSA cannot be completed/filed until after Jan. 1, 2013 for the 2013-2014 school year. (You and your parents use your 2012 tax return to complete the FAFSA.) The fastest way is to file online at www.fafsa.ed.gov

Scholarship and application deadlines for many 4 year universities is Dec. 1, 2012.

                                         Helpful Hints
                                     Read carefully and follow directions
                                 Do not leave blanks on application forms
                                 Use your  full given name not a nickname
                                 Keep copies of EVERYTHING you send in
                              Visit and make contacts at the schools you are considering
                              Respond quickly to all requests from admissions/financial aid
                              Complete applications in black ink or type them. Apply online
                          Use professional email addresses.Not something like:

                           Check your email often for information from colleges to which
                            you have applied
               TAKE RESPONSIBILITY DON'T EXPECT YOUR PARENTS TO DO THIS.
