Frequently Asked Questions
1. When will practices begin? Practices at the golf course will begin Tuesday, March 3, 2009 - if the weather is not too cold! Until then, students will be in my classroom during 8th period, learning golf rules and golf etiquette.
2. When does the team leave school to go to practice at the golf course? The team is allowed to check out after 7th hour to go to the golf course for practice, but only on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. We do not practice at the golf course on Monday
and Friday. On Monday and Friday, the team members are expected to be in my 8th period class if they are at school. Please remember, the start time for 8th period can change if we have had a special program at school. If we are on a normal schedule, 8th period begins at 2:25 PM.
3. What if I work and can’t be at school to pick up my child after 7th hour to take them to practice? In a week, I will be sending out a master list of every players’ parents with their phone numbers.
You will indicate on that paper, by signing it, if you will allow any parent of another team member to pick up your child and transport them to the golf course. School board rules forbid students from riding with coaches to athletic events. If you do not want any of the parents on the list transporting your child to the golf course, you will need to make arrangements for them to get to practice. The school system forbids coaches from setting up these carpools. However, they can provide parents’ names for your use in setting up your carpools. PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU DO NOT WANT YOUR NAME AND PHONE NUMBERS TO APPEAR ON THE PARENT INFORMATION LIST.
4. When will golf matches with other schools begin? There are only 2-3 other middle schools that have a girls’ golf team. I am working with the coaches of those schools to set up our schedule. When the schedule is finalized with the other schools, it will be posted on the school calendar that is on the Pizitz web page. We will not have matches until after Spring Break. Most of our matches take place in April, after daylight savings time goes into effect.
5. Can the team members bring their golf clubs to school in the morning if they are riding to practice with another parent? Yes, after the students are dismissed from the gym in the morning, they can store their golf bag in Ms. Hollingsworth's room (#203).
6. What should the team members wear to practice at the golf course? Vestavia Country Club is allowing us to borrow their golf course for practice. We are required to follow their rules. Their rules state that jeans are not allowed on the golf course. Their rules also state that players must wear soft-spiked shoes. VCC rules state that only collared shirts are worn-no t-shirts, tank tops, etc. They can wear shorts if they are not too short (as defined as being no more than 3 inches above the knee.)
7. When will team members order their team shirts, etc.? On Monday, March 2, Ms. Hollingsworth will give out order forms for our team shirts and practice shirts. There is
also a great bag that the girl’s can use to bring their golf clothes and shoes to school. They can also order visors, jackets, and towels. Everything that we order has the Vestavia Golf logo on it.
8. On the days of practice or matches, when will the players be allowed to change into their golf clothes? They can store their clothes bag in my classroom until the end of 7th hour. Then they go into the girls’ locker room or restroom to change before they leave to go to practice at the golf course.
9. Will the girls have time to eat a snack when they first get at the golf course for practice? No, they need to eat their snack on the way to the golf course. If we can get there as soon as possible after 7th hour, we can get started before the practice range gets crowded. Please remember that VCC allows the high school boys’ and girls’ team, the Pizitz boys’ team, and the Pizitz girls’ team to use their facilities.
10.What is the inclement weather policy for the girls’ golf team? We have to evaluate the weather on a day-by-day basis. It will be helpful to Ms. Hollingsworth if she has everyone’s email address or phone number where you (the parent) can be reached most quickly during the school day. On some occasions, when the weather forecasters predict a rainy or cold front for the next day, practice may be cancelled the day before.
There are some days that it rains in the morning, clears by 1:00 PM, but the golf course is too wet to allow play. On the days of questionable weather, I am in touch with the golf pro at VCC, evaluating whether we can practice or play. Unfortunately, on some days,
the weather will look fine, but rain will move in after we are at the golf course. We just have to be flexible in determining whether we can play when there is inclement weather.
