WELCOME TO MR. ODELL'S 2011 - 2012 EARTH SCIENCE
This is a map of Virginia showing the Geographic Provinces of the state. From left to right: Appalachian Plateau; Valley and Ridge; Blue Ridge; Piedmont and Coastal Plain. The provinces are all determined by the topography of land and the geological characteristics of the bedrock, etc. Learning these provinces leads to better understanding of the geology of the land and helps students to understand more about the great state of Virginia. Virginia has lots of interesting places, facts, features and tourist locations and they all have been impacted in one way or another by the geology of the land. MAKE-UP WORK Please refer to the Student Code of Conduct for information on makeup work. Assistance for make-up work can be had by setting up time in advance to receive help or coming to Rm 102 during extended study. Mr. Odell arrives at Deep Run HS at 7:55 most mornings. Students can by by Rm 102 prior to 8:30 in the morning to submit work or meet with Mr. Odell. Before 8:30, extended study and after school are times the teacher can help you. A STUDENT HAS 1 CALENDAR SCHOOL WEEK TO COMPLETE RE-TAKES AND MAKE-UPS !!!!! THIS IS A STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY. IT IS NOT THE JOB OF A TEACHER TO TRACK A STUDENT DOWN. IMPORTANT REMINDER: There is no such thing as re-take on quizzes. When you do poorly on a quiz in class you cannot re-take it for a better grade. The re-take policy only pertains to tests that are taken. And, if you desire to re-take a test you must have gottten less than 70% on it on the first attempt. It is not the teacher's responsibility to track a student down to re-take a test. That is solely a student responsibility. Re-takes must be completed within 1 calendar week. SOL WEBSITES: Scroll to the bottom of this page to "Useful Links" and locate websites that offer SOL help and even give old tests and test questions. Contact Mr. Odell for further help.
STUDENT FAILURE / TEST RETAKES At Deep Run HS we want students to learn. Learning means being able to self direct yourself. That is the ultimate outcome desired. Learning means being able to retrieve information. It means being able to locate and utilize info in an efficient manner. It means being able to decipher info and breaking it down into components that allow students to solve problems and apply it to real-life situations. Learning is also the ability to retain and use information acquired from past experiences. At DRHS, students have the opportunity to retake tests and quizzes and lessons when the teacher deems it necessary. If a student has demonstrated marked work ethic and determination, but the retention is falling short, then work is allowed to be "re-learned", "re-mediated" or "re-done". A student should consult Mr. Odell in this situation. Or Mr. Odell may contact the student. From the faculty Handbook- Retake Policy- Student Failure Our mission is success for all students. Formative assessment allows us to understand how our students are progressing in their coursework. Our own observations of student work should provide us with a sense of when students are adequately prepared for summative assessments such as major projects and tests. However, in some cases, the curriculum may be designed in such a way that students are assessed before they have demonstrated an adequate understanding of the curriculum. If a teacher is aware of students who have diligently worked to learn the material (e.g., they have turned in all homework assignments, they have come for extra assistance, they have actively participated in class) and have nonetheless not been successful on the summative assessment (i.e., they received a failing grade on the test or major project), the teacher should, at his/her discretion, provide the student with further time to practice and apply their learning in preparation for a major assessment. Any student who fails on a major project/assessment may be required, at the teacher’s discretion, to attend re-learning sessions before school, during extended study, or after school—the teacher and student should arrange for this re-learning session. These sessions should target specific areas of weakness, and, when the teacher and student feel that the content has been learned, an opportunity for reassessment of that learning must be given. It is important to note that the student should not be given the same assessment they already had the opportunity to take. Rather, the student should be given a different assessment through which they might demonstrate learning (e.g., a project in lieu of a test, an independent essay instead of a short answer test, an oral report in lieu of a multiple choice test). Like other “extra credit” opportunities, students who take and pass this reassessment should be given a higher grade on the original assessment (e.g., if they pass the reassessment, they should be given a passing grade, although the grade does not have to be as high as the grade earned on the reassessment). Please follow the guidelines listed if you are ever interested in retaking a test: 1. Contact the teacher. The student must initiate the retake procedure. The teacher is not going to contact the student. (Use your Gaggle account.) 2. Set up a time to discuss with the teacher in person your plans for retaking the test. Before school, extended study or after school. The teacher will not use class time to take care of this situation. 3. Retakes must be completed by the Friday of the week the test was administered. 4. A student can only retake a test if they received a grade of 69 or lower. 5. There are never any retakes given for quizzes. 6. Only Extended Study will be used to administer a retake test. 7. The decision for a retake test to be given lies with the teacher. 8. The student cannot record any higher than a 70% on a retake test. THOUGHT: "In life, there are no "do-overs". Choose wisely." In the "Book Of Life" the answers cannot be found in the back. Classroom Tools: Dell Laptop Computer Virtual Share Gaggle.net ---- Email system for teacher/student Hardcopy Textbook ( home version) Hardcopy Textbook ( Classroom Set) Class Materials Teacher Distributed Packets (handouts) Discovery Learning Explore Learning Quia Exam View Pro HCPS Link Note To Parents: 1. "Inc" in HCPS Link refers to the fact that the assignment has been posted by the teacher but either it has not been graded or it has not been recorded in the gradebook yet. The teacher does not record an "Inc". Only the computer records this. If you see an "Inc" it is not being averaged in the student's grade. The grade you see is the actual average that is on hand. 2. A grade of "0" means the student has not completed the assignment or is still working on it. They may have also been absent and may need to meet with the teacher to make up the work. This can be done before or after school or during Extended Study. It is the student's responsibility to arrange this make-up time. If the student has a zero, it is being averaged in. They have to get this rectified or the "0" remains constant.

Mandatory for all honors level classes. The project is designed to be a "totally outside the classroom" activity. The teacher will provide assistance and guidance but the project is totally the student's. Guidance will be given in the area of design, research, bibliography and topic pertinence. The student is totally responsible for their paper and project. An evaluation grade will be given for the project. Contact Mr. Odell if you have questions. College prep students may enter the Fair if they so desire, but it is not mandatory. It may serve as an alternate assignment.
SCIENCE FAIR: DOES NOT APPLY TO COLLEGE PREP All honors level Earth Science students at DRHS are required to enter the Metro Richmond Science Fair or the Virginia Junior Academy of Science. (VJAS) This will require designing an experiment, performing your experiment and writing a research paper in regards to your experiment. Students will be receiving further info as the school year progresses. A timeline will be assigned to help the student be organized. ***** SEE THE WEBSITES LOCATED AT BOTTOM OF PAGE FOR EARTH SCIENCE HELP. ESPECIALLY THE HURRICANE AND WEATHER SITES.
