ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION:
Your final grade will be determined based on the following components:
Participation (10 %)
It is very important that the students participate in class discussions, presenting any problem, question or comment about the readings from the text. Participation will involve resolving the students' doubts, as well as helping their classmates to a better understanding of the course.
Quizzes (15 %)
There will be several quizzes during the semester, appoximately every 2 chapters. They will be announced a week in advance, and will be based on the readings and films seen in class. No make-up quizzes will be granted without a documented excuse.
Opinion papers (10 %)
There will be two opinion papers, 3 pages each, in which the students will describe their opinion and/or reflections on the videos/films showed in the classroom.
Althought the students will be allowed to choose any of the videos/films for their papers, they will have to turn the fist one before October 2.
Midterm exam (20 %)
There will be a midterm exam on October 4. It will include all material reviewed in class till that date (principally readings and class discussions). The format of the exam will be a combination of multiple choice and short answer questions. No make-up exams will be granted without a documented excuse.
Final exam (25 %)
There will be a final exam, at a date to be determined. It will be cumulative, but the emphasis will be on the 2nd half of the semester. The format of the exam will be a combination of multiple choice and short answer questions.
Final research project (20 %)
In order to study a specific theme or topic in more depth, students will write a research paper (8-10 pages, doble spaced) on a topic of interest to them. The topic should be narrow. It can focus on a work of literature, a work of art, an historical event, a current event or issue. The paper should be well organized. It should include a formal biography of at least 4 sources. Topics must be approved by the instructor via e-mail or during office hours. The paper will be due on November 20. Late work will not be accepted without a documented excuse.
