Staffers are simultaneously working on a variety of assignments at the same time. Some are learning new computer programs. Some are taking on leadership roles and planning the organization of the book. The editors are setting deadlines, installing software, and assigning pages to be developed by the different sections of the book.
Our book is divided up into the following categories:
Art [cover, divider pages, opening and closing pages, endsheets]
Fine Arts [visual arts, drama, chorus, band, orchestra]
People [senior portraits, underclassmen]
Sports [all organized sports approved by the athletic director]
Wild Life [student life, homecoming, prom, spirit week, etc.]
Advertisements [business ads and recognition ads purchased by parents]
For any given assignment, the staffer must develop a "fishbone" to brainstorm ideas for content, design a mini-layout, create an InDesign CS3 document and create the design, take pictures, download pictures and crop and insert them into their spread, proofread spread, and turn document into page editor by their deadline.
In between times we are participating in activities that help us to develop teamwork, improve time management skills, and to release stress in a positive fashion.
Opportunities are given to earn bonus points for going beyond the line of duty, helping someone else out, staying after school, giving up your lunch to work, putting forth a new idea, etc.
There's a lot more to it than this, but it's a start. Please refer to the grading sheet to see how their work is divided up into areas of responsibility. You will notice that points are given for selling advertisements. Please know that the school does not subsidize us in any way. The cost of the book alone does not cover publishing costs and operating expenses. We have to pay the bill to Walsworth Publishing. And we have to buy computers, software, printers, scanners, toner cartridges, digital camera, memory sticks, camera bags, batteries, . . .
and of course - Ice Cream - everyone deserves a little treat now and then for doing a good job. These kids really work hard and don't get a lot of recognition. I try to make sure that within the classroom, they are appreciated.
. . . therefore we have to sell ads to make ends meet. Yearbook Grade Sheet
