Activity #1

The telegraph was an invention that enabled news about the Civil War to travel faster than at any other time in prior history. A telegrapher tapped out messages in Morse code, and others on the receiving end of the messages could translate the coded dots (short electrical impulses) and dashes (long electrical impulses) into letters and words.

Select and then copy the Morse Code message below.  Then go to the website and paste the message into the box towards the bottom of the page where you translate Code into English.
Oh my goodness!  What does it say?
Then, use your Morse Code sheet to create a message for your partner.  The message you create should say something about the Civil War.

Next, go to the website listed below.  Play around creating a short message for your partner.  It should be a question that has something to do with the Civil War.
Then, switch computers, play the message and create an answer to it.

{Just type letters, numbers and punctuation into the top box and press the "Translate" button. The program tidies up what you entered (removing any illegal characters) and places the Morse code in the bottom box. If you want to hear the Morse code, press the "Play" button . You can choose the speed of the playback from the pull-down menu.]

Activity #2

Get out a piece of paper.
1. Look over your Civil War notes and list 5 people, places, or events, etc. that you would like to know more about.  (If you are a general in the war, you might want to find out more about yourself.)

2. Then do a Google search to find a Civil War website.
Browse the topics on the site that interest you.  Write down the names of 5 topics that you find most interesting. These,of course, must be different then the first five that you listed.

3. Put a star by the 5 topics on this list that would be your favorites to learn more about.

4. Select one to collect notes about.  Write down the name of this topic.  Find a good  website that has info on this topic.  On the next line of your paper jot down the information about the site that would be needed to list it in MLA format. ( Author,Title, last update, date accessed, URL )

5.  Read over the info on the website and then begin taking notes on the pertinent information.
