Earth Science/Life Science COURSE OVERVIEW The subjects covered in this class are aligned with the academic content standards for CIM/CAM. This class is divided into two sections: ∑ First Semester — Earth & Space Science (Text: Glencoe’s Earth Science). The topics we will cover are the resources of the earth, the water cycle, the earth's dynamic structure, and the earth's place in the solar system. ∑ Second Semester — Life Science (Text: Glencoe’s Life Science). The subjects covered in this semester are the laws of heredity, natural selection, and populations in their environment. COURSE REQUIREMENTS Students need to bring pencil (or pen), notebook paper, and science notebook every day. Quarter and semester grades are based upon the percent of points earned for homework, classwork, projects, assigned readings, tech show projects, quizzes, and tests. The grading scale is as follows: 90 % - 100% = A 80% - 89% = B 70% - 79% = C 60% - 69% = D below 60% = F ASSIGNMENTS A list of assignments and their due dates is posted in the classroom. Students returning from an excused absence should check this list upon their return. If a student's absence is unexcused, he or she will not receive points for any missed assignments. ATTENDANCE POLICY Class time is limited and every minute is valuable. Arriving late is a serious disruption for both teacher and students. Any student who is tardy 10 or more minutes late will be counted absent unexcused. Every three tardies less than ten minutes is also counted as an unexcused absence. Fifteen absences in any one semester will result in a loss of credit for the entire class. In accordance with Benson policy, the student has the right to appeal for reinstatement of credit. Appeals are generally denied when the absences are unexcused. STUDENT SUCCESS There is much to be learned. Students will need to need to stay current and learn a little each day. Many questions raised in class cannot be answered in a single period. Finding answers will frequently be an ongoing process. To succeed in this course, students must... be in class be on time use class time to learn science complete assignments on time take responsibility for their own education. I look forward to helping each and every student learn and grow. I may need help from parents at times to help me reach this goal. Conversely, if parents have any special concerns, questions, or comments, please feel free to contact me. Chris Hager
