READING VOCABULARY Mrs. Handline’s Class Aug. 20th thru Aug. 24th 1) synonym: words that mean almost the same thing. (ex: big-large, small- , love- ) 2) antonym: words that mean the opposite. (ex: hot-cold, big-small, quiet- , happy- ) 3) figurative language: words that do NOT mean exactlt what they say. (Ex: I had a mountain of homework to do last night. ) 4) literal language: words that mean EXACTLY what they say. (Ex: My two pages of homework is due tomorrow.) 5) frantically: to do something in a great hurry and worriedly. 6) grimace: an expression on a face showing disgust or disapproval. 7) massive: large or heavy and solid in structure or size. 8) impolite: to NOT be polite; to be rude and without manners. (prefix im= ) 9) hesitate: to stop or pause because of uncertainty or not being able to decide. 10) assure: to provide a guarantee—to cause to be certain.. 11) anguish: extreme pain or distress of body or mind. 12) terrorize: to fill with great fear; to force someone to do something by threat of violence. 13) charge: a rush attack on the enemy; an assault. 14) scramble: to move or climb quickly on all fours. 15) appreciate: to think highly of; to see the worth of something. **BONUS (test on these items will be fill in the blank—need to MEMORIZE the definition!) *hysterical: to have unmanageable emotions-overly excited outburst. *considerate: to think of others rights and feelings-to put others first. *humane: to have compassion-to treat people an animals with kindness and respect HOMEWORK FOR READING *Turn in on Tues: 1) WRITE a paragraph (1/2 page) using 10 vocabulary words describing an accident or catastrophe. 2) AND READpg.____to pg.______in trade book! Return Book TOMORROW!!! *Turn in on Wed: 8 Vocabulary PICTURES that show the meaning of the words. (label!) Directions: draw a picture that shows the meaning of a reading word above. Be sure to label your pictures with the reading word and be sure to include enough details in your p icture so that others can guess what they mean! *Turn in on Thurs: STUDY for TEST on Reading Vocabulary and Comprehension!!!
