Week of September 7 - September 10 We're starting our exploration of the first unit in the literature book. The big question is: Is the truth the same for everyone? We will begin by reading a historical essay by Patricia C. and Frederick McKissack entitled "The Baker Heater League." It is about railroad porters and the stories they shared with each other. (Ask your child who Daddy Joe is!) We are also working on analogies to increase our vocabulary awareness and relationships between words. Soft cover text books (All-in-One books) will be opened and used for the first time this year in relation to the Big Question vocabulary and "The Baker Heater League." By Friday, students should have completed pages 3, 4, 5 and 8, 9, & 10 for two separate grades. Students will also begin their first "novice" set of LINCS practice words on Thursday (5 words) for which they will be quizzed upon on Friday for strategy effectiveness. Students will also be graded on correctness of completing the cards for this lesson. Lastly, we are trying to squeeze in discussion about elements of plot (including introduction, inciting incident, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution, and denouement). Students are likely familiar with many of these terms, but we will be using them in discussions about the literature we read. A short 4-day school week after a 3-day holiday weekend invites a lot of room for students to lose the pace in class. Be sure to check planners for assignments and due dates. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me via email. Have a wonderful week! Mrs. Hastie
