Language Arts
Reading- We had a great time celebrating the monthly 5 point AR Reward with the kickball game last Friday! Mrs. Hursh was the pitcher, Mrs. Knock was the referee, and the kids all played very fair and square, with lots of laughs thrown in between!
This week we will wrap up our study of poetry. Early in the week we will write limericks, which we learned about last week. Then our unit will conclude with Haiku, a Japanese poetry that follows a 5, 7, 5 syllable pattern, but do not rhyme. Haiku are usually written about nature, but we will not necessarily stick to this rule. The school year will end with a mini author’s study of Chris VanAllsburg, one of Mrs. Hursh’s favorite authors. Mr. VanAllsburg wrote Jumanji, The Polar Express, Zathura, and Two Bad Ants, among several other classics. His works are so terrific because they often leave the reader hanging and thinking about the author’s meaning, which is really great literature!

Writing/Grammar- For the next few weeks, reading and writing will be intermixed. Styles of poetry will be introduced in Reading class and we will work on writing this type of poem in writing. All final copies of poems will be put into our hardcover poetry book which will be sent home as a keepsake at the end of the year.

Spelling- OUR LAST UNIT FOR SPELLING features words with suffixes –less, -ment, and –ness. Students will need to know the correct spelling and meaning of the words for the weekly test on Friday. We will practice this in class and please visit the class website for additional practice. THIS WILL BE THE LAST TEST OF THE YEAR, LET’S MAKE IT THE BEST!

       Math
This week, we will continue to practice the skill of making change without the use of paper/pencil.  I have taught the students how to count the correct change, starting with the amount due, then counting up to the bill given. We've even thrown in that tricky part when we give the cashier pennies with our bill(s) so we do not receive pennies back in change!  We're having fun with this and I know they are proud that they are learning this important life skill! In addition, we will review 2 and 3 digit multiplication.

Social Studies
We will read and discuss the impact that WWII had on Ohioans during the 1940's.  We'll talk about Amelia Earhart and Charles Lindbergh too! We are flying through history! I would like for the students to bring in ONE last newspaper article this week (by tomorrow, please!).  It's been awhile since our last one (before testing) and the kids really enjoy hearing about these current events! Also, we will have our final state quiz this FRIDAY!

Science
We will harvest and wash our lettuce on Monday, and Mrs. Hursh hopes the rain stays away long enough to harvest! Mrs. Hursh will also wash the lettuce at home, so everything will be very clean for our SALAD PARTY on Tuesday. Please be sure your child has sent in their salad party item by Tuesday. This party is always a great time for students to see the “fruits of their labor” and enjoy some foods they may not usually try.
Later in the week we will continue to learn about plants and the functions of particular plant parts. On Wednesday, we will “dissect” flowers, using our new stereoscopes in the science lab, to learn how the miniature parts of a flower contribute to a plants reproductive cycle. The week will wrap up with a study of how plant parts like: stem, leaf, root, and flower, contribute to the plant’s life cycle.
