Overview:
ALWAYS SEE CALENDAR OF EVENTS FOR CHANGES
This course is a study of Virginia and United States History from the Age of Exploration to the present. The curriculum for this class has been aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning. The primary content of this course will be taken from the History and Social Science Standards of Learning Curriculum Framework provided by the Virginia Dept. of Education. Student resources will include the provided textbook, handouts, and notes. You will be provided with SOL study guides. It is your responsibility to keep all study guides in your notebook. You will need these at the end of the school year.
Grading:
Your grade for each six weeks will be based on classroom assignments, classroom participation, quizzes, and tests.
Materials needed:
Unless otherwise advised, each day you need to bring the following items to class:
• Textbook.
• A three-ring binder (with paper) dedicated to U.S. History.
• A pen or pencil.
• Colored Pencils
Major content areas to be covered during the first semester:
First Contact to 1789:
• Early America: Early Claims, Early Conflicts
• Revolution and the New Nation
History 1789-1877:
• The United States Constitution
• Expansion and Reform
• The Civil War and Reconstruction
Classroom Rules and Expectations:
1. Treat EVERYONE and EVERYTHING in the classroom with RESPECT.
2. Be in the classroom and ready to work when the bell rings.
3. No Food or Drink, although water is acceptable.
4. All rules and policies of AHS will be strictly enforced.

2. In what ways did the Continental Congress act like a government?
3. What disadvantages did the British Troops and the Continental Army face in the War on Indenpedence?
4. Why was the British surrender at Saratoga a turning point for the American's?
