WELCOME TO FOURTH GRADE!!! I am so excited to have your child in the fourth grade. If you have any questions or concerns, please send me a note, leave a message at school (345-0977), call me at home (345-8841),or email me through Quia. Week of May 21, 2012 Messages: New Messages: Grades are updated. There will be no bus service from May 21-25. May 25 is 1/2 day. Aftercare will be open the last week of school. ____________________________________________________________________ ****Tuesday, May 22 is Electronic Day for 4th Grade with the following guidelines. ---Hand held electronic devices can be brought to school such as I-Pod, I-Pad, DS, etc. ---Appropriate games and music only ---It is only allowed in the classroom. ---It must be kept in the book sack before school starts and after the dismissal bell. ---No phones will be allowed ---No sharing, no texting, no pictures or videotaping will be allowed ---The student is responsible for his/her device ---A consequence will be issued to anyone not following the guidelines. ____________________________________________________________________ Students are creating various poems and writing them in their Poem Book (blank book brought at the beginning of school). The poems with directions as well as an example can be found at the bottom of my Quia under Useful Links labeled Poem Book for Students. It is also on the computers at school. Ongoing Messages: You child has been given a user name and password to continue with the First in Math program they started in 3rd grade. Everyone is starting over, but this program can be worked on at home in addition to school. Prizes for completing sections of the different activities will be given weekly. The prize is a Snack Coupon for your child to bring any snack he/she wants for one school day. It can be a soft drink and other food snacks that they are not normally allowed to bring (candy, cookies, etc.) This program is an excellent tool to use for practice in math. Please encourage your child to practice his/her multiplication flash cards every night. Some of the students are still very slow in responding to these facts. Therefore, long multiplication is taking longer than necessary. This is a life-long skill that needs to be mastered. There are several students who are still missing supplies. It is difficult to complete activities/assignments/projects without all the necessary supplies. Please check with your child to see what he/she needs. Remember only navy or white jackets can be worn inside. Firstinmath can be done at home. Students can earn Snack it Your Way Coupons for completing each set. The coupon gives the student a privilege to bring any kind of food and any kind of drink as their snack. Spelling City is a great way to learn and practice the weekly spelling words. Please ask your child about Factivation. It is a great multiplication website that teaches facts which makes it fun and easy to learn. I bought the added program so that all of my students are able to go online and play the videos for fact rules, strategies, chants, and connections as well as play games to reinforce the facts. I encourage your child to practice his/her facts and to use this fabulous tool to learn his/her multiplication facts. I have several website games and practice. Please look at the very bottom of my Quia. Some are labeled all subjects while others are specific skills in a certain subject. Please check them out and let the games begin. Just a reminder that there will be 5 addition facts, 5 subtraction facts, and 5 multiplication facts and 5 division facts on each weekly timed test. Just a reminder that I have many websites to practice multiplication facts. Please encourage your child to practice at home daily. Also writing the facts and doing flashcards are very effective. We will do a combination of doing hands-on activities, making manipulatives, watching videos, listening to CD's, writing facts several times each, and doing practice sheets in class. We will also assign practice sheets and writing facts for homework. Please continue to collect Boxtops for Education, Tyson chicken labels, and Community Coffee labels. We have a collection box in our classroom. Please put the labels in a baggie with your child's name, my name, and 4th grade written on it. Check the calendar for upcoming events. ***Check Quia under Robbyn Davis for additional Social Studies information and under Beth Daschbach for additional Science information. ___________________________________________________________________ Test Schedule Remember: Ongoing English Skills can be on upcoming English tests: kinds of sentences, fragment or sentence, how to answer in a complete sentence, complete/simple subjects/predicates, compound subjects/predicates, common/proper nouns, singular/plural nouns, possessive nouns, pronouns, possessive pronouns, and main/helping/linking verbs, tense, subject/verb agreement, verbs, prepositions, adjectives, and adverbs.
