HighWay = integrated Faith Studies and Life Skills for middle schoolers

Before the word “Christian” was invented, disciples of Jesus were known as followers of “the Way” (see, for example, Acts 9:1-2). Adopting a playful variation of this rich biblical metaphor as our class title and theme, TES middle school students on the “HighWay” will dive deeply into the Bible and principles of Christian faith while at the same time asking how these teachings apply to their daily living.  At each grade level students will explore developmentally appropriate social skills topics to encourage healthy relationships with self, peers, family and community. Homework assignments will encourage dialog at home, giving family members an opportunity to travel with their students on the journey. The goal is to equip them to take the “high” road in life, combining social intelligence, scholarship and devotion to become faithful servant leaders.

In first trimester this year seventh graders will take HighWay 201 through the New Testament to get better acquainted with the life and ministry of Jesus in the Gospels, and His continuing life and ministry through the Church, especially as it is shared in Acts and the letters written to the Church.

In addition to certain life skills (e.g., dealing with anger, conflict resolution, budgeting and money management, how to be a savvy consumer, how to communicate effectively, etc.) the class will also be looking at the biblical witness through the "lens" of food.  What did Jesus and his disciples eat?  What role did food play in his teaching and in the formation of the new Christian community?

While exploring the role of food in the New Testament we will also examine the way food is produced, processed, packaged, sold, and consumed today in the US with an eye towards issues related to health, energy, immigration, the treatment of animals, and the growing "buy local" movement.  Along the way we'll begin a garden and take a number of field trips (for which we'll be recruiting parent chauffers -- interested in helping?  Make sure you're an approved TES volunteer!).

This web page is offered as a way for students to "digitally engage" with the curriculum.  Students may:
Come here for assignments if they are out of school!
Come here for helpful links to study and research tools!
Come here for class news and needs.

So pack your bags, gas up the car, and fasten your seat belts!  We're gonna hit the road!
