Austin brings first colonists to Texas 1825 Green DeWitt establishes a colony near Austin 1825 Martin de Leon and his wife settle the town of Victoria Section 1 Focus: Moses Austin and his son Stephen F. The first reliable census in 1777 listed 20 African Americans, most of whom were probably enslaved. Another census in 1785 listed 43 enslaved people.
