Have you ever thought about how lucky you are? If you have a warm bed, a roof over your head, good food, and a family who cares about you--- you are lucky. There are many children who do not have these things.

Read some of the poems and essays on the links below. Think about what you have and how lucky you are.

Use your writer's notebook to explore this topic. Pictures, drawings, poems, essays, stories.....as always....rough draft quality. Just use this as an opportunity to REFLECT and to THINK.

Writer’s Notebook Assignment
Due November 20 and 21st.


You may choose your grade on this assignment by completing the assignments you wish. You may do as many assignments as you wish, but your grade cannot exceed 100 points. For the purposes of this assignment, “house,” “home,” and “family” may be used interchangeably. You may illustrate any of these assignments using sketches, paintings, photographs, stickers, stamps, or magazine cut-outs. Be sure to identify the assignment you are completing at the top of your notebook page. Be sure to date each page. Check off the assignments as you complete them and record your points.


Points Assignments
10 1. Writing a poem- Write a poem about your home. Choose one sentence from Georgia Heard’s essay. Use it as the first line of a poem you will write about your home. You may write any form of poetry you wish.
5 2. Three-Two-One- Thinking Write three things you love about your home. Write two things you wish for in your house. Write one thing you can do to help your family. (Be sure to label what you write so that you will remember the assignment later.)
10 3. I AM POEM- Personify your house in an “I AM” poem.
5 4. Thinking and Writing- Assuming that your family is all outside and safe, and your house caught on fire, what one thing would you choose to save? Write a paragraph to explain why.
10 5. Compose a message for your family’s telephone answering machine. Your message should show reveal something you love about your family.
5 6. Write a Bio-Poem about yourself.
5 7. Write a Bio-Poem about one of your family members.
10 pts. 8. Choose an adjective to describe your house and then use it to write an acrostic poem.
5 9. Make a list of words to describe smells associated with your house.
5. 10. Make a list of words to describe sounds associated with your house.
5 11. Make a list of words to describe tastes associated with your house.
5 12. Make a list of words to describe textures (touch) associated with your house.
5 13. Make a list of words to describe sights (including colors) associated with your house.
5 14. Make a list of synonyms for HOUSE. (Use a thesaurus or a dictionary for help.)
20 15. Take the list you wrote in #14 and rate the words on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 is highest). You are rating which words bring the most desirable image. (See me if you have questions)
10 16. A simile is a comparison using “like” or “as.” Write a simile for your house. Example: “My house is like a nest protecting me as I grow.”
10 17. Design an alliterative sign that you could hang outside your house. Example: “The Wacky Whitehursts”
20 18. If you could design your own dream house, list ten features you would include and explain why.
10 19. Ask your mom for one of your favorite recipes. Copy it in your notebook.
10 20. Write a recipe for a happy family.
10 21. Look for the details in your house. Choose three details and write about what they reveal about your family.
10 22. If you were to create a video about your family, what music would you use as a soundtrack. Write a paragraph to explain why.
50 23. Make a video or presentation about your family. You may add music if you like. You may do this with just a video camera and bring in the VHS tape. You may create a powerpoint presentation or a keynote presentation. You may make an I-Movie. You decide what you want on the video.
