Night Summary

It all starts out right before WWII, in a town called Sighet in Poland. When this old man named Moshe the Beadle, who had been teaching the children the Jewish religion, had been captured. No one knew where he went or what he did wrong. He escaped from where they took him and warned everyone about what was going to happen. He knew that the Nazi's were planning on taking them all to concentration camps. No one believed the old man because, everyone thought he was crazy. A couple of days passed and sure enough, the Nazi's herded the whole town into one small ghetto. Then, they separated the men and woman and took them to different concentration camps. The whole story is told through a boy named Elie. He and his father were taken to Auschwitz, the biggest of all of the concentration camps. After they the men and woman were split up, he never saw his mother or sister ever again. Elie and his father had to lie about their age to bypass the gas chambers. In this book, it tells everything that the boy went through and the troubling things that he has to go though. Elie had a gold tooth and the doctors of the camp checked everyone's mouth to see if they had gold. If they did have gold, they pulled out their tooth. The doctor that examined Elie was killed because they found out that he was stealing gold. He and his father were then exported to Buna. They were there for a very long time. Here, they found out that he had a gold tooth. His father was beaten very badly until they got his tooth out with a rusty spoon. Then, Buna is bombed and the end of everything is very near. The camp is abandoned because the Russians were coming to save them. The Nazi's made them go on a very long run that lasted 2 or 3 days. Elie hurt his foot and had to get it operated. It was very cold and the people had to take shifts sleeping. While Elie was sleeping, his father died. Then the Nazi's surrendered and he was rescued after a very long and grueling time in the concentration camps.
