Poetry Vocabulary

1) Sprightly – Marked by a gay lightness and vivacity

2) Pensive- amusingly and dreamily thoughtful

3) Furled- to wrap or roll

4) Temperate- marked by moderation, generally associated with weather

5) Simultaneous- existing or occurring at the same time.

6) Emplacement- the situation or location of something

7) Peony -  A plant with large double flowers

8) Downy- soft or soothing

9) Crimped- To cause to be wavy, bent, or pinched

10) Purged- to get rid of something unwanted

11) Whetted – To sharpen a knife on something else.

12) Fringes- an ornamental border consisting of threads

13) Exalted- to raise in rank or praise.

14) Docile- Easily taught or obedient.

15) Prodigious- Exciting, amusement, or wonder.

Poetry Definitions

1) Accent- the stress or accent that falls on the first syllable.

2) Alliteration- the repetition of similar sounding words.

3) Anapest- three syllables, two short followed by one long.

4) Approximate Rhyme- words that help the reader imagine what's being said.

5) Assonance- usually vowel sounds with a repetition or a pattern usually a tongue twister.

6) Couplet - a pair of lines in a poem that are of the same length and usually come together to rhyme.

7) Dactyl- three syllables, one long, followed by one two short.

8) Elegy- a poem that remembers a person’s death.

9) Exact Rhyme- rhyme that is continuous.

10) Foot- two or more syllables that together make up the smallest combination of rhyme.

11) Refrain- a verse repeated at intervals throughout a poem.

12) Rhythm- a pattern or flow of sound created by the arrangement of stressed and unstressed syllables.

13) Scansion- analysis verse into patters.

14) Simile- using like or as.

15) Sonnet- fourteen lines long and there are two sonnets Italian and English. 25. Stanza- a part of a poem that is two or more lines long.

16) Stress- they have long vowels they also have different pitches and louder than other syllables.

17) Symbol- printed or written sign used to represent operation.

18) Tetrameter- has four metrical feet.

19) Tone- sound of distinct pitch.

20) Trochee- a metrical foot consisting of a stressed syllable followed by an unstressed syllable.

Overview of the Poetry Unit

During the second semester of Mr. Hopper's class you will go through a poetry unit. During this time you will learn many poetry definitions. You will also go step by step in learning how to analyze poems. By the end of the unit you will be able to find the literal and symbolic meanings in poems. You learn how to pick apart a poem stanza by stanza to find the meaning. You will also be given a poet that you will have to research and present your information and a couple poems for your poetry project. This is mainly what the poetry unit will consist of.
