Who hasn’t sharpened the edge of his soul?       Pablo Neruda

This class is hard.  I mean really hard.  So hard in fact you may feel like you won't be able to pass it, but never fear you will.  It's as Neitzche said, you don't just walk over the abyss, you dance over it.

Classroom Rules and Expectations

There are only three rules for this classroom; each student is expected to follow these rules.  If a student feels that they will be unable to follow the following rules they should let me know as soon as possible.
1.Respect Yourself
2.Respect Each Other
3.Respect Mr. Hopper

I will also be expected to follow these rules myself.  If a student ever feels that I have not respected them, they should feel comfortable coming to me and letting me know.

Students are expected to be in the classroom and in their seats when the bell rings or they will be considered tardy and receive a demerit.

Class Participation

During every six-week period, each student will begin with thirty participation points.  Students will lose five points daily if they do any of the following-
1.Sleep in class
2.Refuse to participate in class
3.Fail to pay attention to myself or fellow classmates
4.Fail to bring materials to class

A student is capable of receiving a zero in class participation in the course of the six-week period, but they cannot go below the zero mark.

Take Home Assignments

Any take home assignment is due by the beginning of the class period on the date outlined when the assignment is given (unless special instructions state otherwise at the time the assignment is given).  Ten percent will be deducted for every day the assignment is late.  (For example: A paper that receives an 86% but if it is two days late it will be given a 66%).

If a student is not in class on the day the assignment is due, they must provide documentation from a doctor or parent.  If they fail to do so, the assignment will be considered late and will loose ten percent.

All take home assignments must be typed (unless otherwise directed).  I will not accept non-typed work.  In addition, all papers must be in MLA format, 12 pt. Font, Times New Roman with one-inch margins on every side of the paper.

All students are required to bring a three ring binder to class next Monday, students will keep these binders in class and all their work throughout the year will be kept in these binders.  For every day after Monday a student doesn’t have their binder they will loose five participation points.

Tests and Quizzes

If a student is absent on the day of a test or quiz they are responsible for making up that test or quiz after or before school.  A zero will be entered in the grade book until the assignment is made up.  The student will be given five days from when they return to make up the assignment, after that the assignment can no longer be made up.

Both the final and the mid-term will be weighted 20% of the student’s grade.

Because I am human, errors may occur while grading despite my best efforts.  I encourage every student to double-check any assignments, quiz or test.  If a mistake is made and brought to my attention I will review it, correct the error and update the grade book.  It is also important for students to bring me graded assignments, which they do not understand so that we may go over the answers they got wrong, learning and growing from these mistakes.

Cheating

I make different tests for different classes to discourage cheating, however despite my efforts it still continues.  If a student allows another to do their work, such as writing their paper or giving them answers to questions on the test, both parties will receive zeros.  In addition these infractions will be logged and if either student is caught cheating again they will fail the class for that semester.
