Explorers Projects

 

Each student is required to do a timeline and a project:

 

A. Make a timeline of the dates and why the explorers are famous.  You may find information on all the explorers at http://www.quia.com/pages/hostetterexplorers.html

 

The following explorers should be on your timeline:

Prince Henry, Bartolomeu Dias, Leif Erickson, Christopher Columbus, Vasco da Gama, Ponce de Leon, Vasco Nunez de Balboa, Ferdinand Magellan, Amerigo Vespucci, Hernando de Soto, Francisco Coronado, Hernando Cortes, Francisco Pizzarro, Henry Hudson, Jacques Cartier, John Cabot, Samuel de Champlain, and Marco Polo. 

 

B. Chose ONE project from the list below.  10 extra credit points will be given to the student who does two projects from the list. 

 

1. Make a map of 5 explorersí journey, including routes and symbol key.

2. Create a PowerPoint presentation on one explorer, a map and a picture.

3. A one page report on any of the explorers.  It must be in your own words.

4. Write a journal for an explorer for a month.

5. Make a paper model of an explorerís ship.

6. Make a model of an explorerís ship out of clay or other material.

7. Write a speech convincing a king or queen to give you money to take a voyage.

8.  Create an advertisement to convince sailors to go on a voyage with you.

9. Do an Acrostic poem on an explorer.

10. Create a rap song or other song the sailors may have used.

11. Make a map of the stars and tell how they were used for navigation. 

12. Compare and contrast in a written report the life of a sailor then and now.

13. Compare and contrast in a written report the technology of ships now and then.

14. Research and write a 1 page report on diseases found on ships.

15. Write a 1 page report on at least 3 important inventions of the explorerís time period.

16. Make a diorama of the new land, or voyages, or ships.  You must also do an oral presentation. 

17. Create a political cartoon about an explorer.

18. Make a sketch of a ship on paper and label the different parts of the ship.

19. Check with me about doing another project that has to do with explorers!
