Semester 2 Short Answer Final Exam English IV (Plumb)

DIRECTIONS: Choose two of the following questions and write at least a full-sized paragraph response (5-7 sentences). The responses may be handwritten or typed. Every response must contain SPECIFIC DETAILS from the novel. This short answer portion of the test is due when you walk into the room to take the Scantron part of your test. Each response is worth 10 points each.

1. Why did Albert Camus choose The Stranger as the title for this novel? Do you see Mersault as “the stranger”? Why or why not? Use at least three details from the novel to explain your reason.

2. The sun and sea/beach are complex symbols in this novel. Describe the dual role they play, noting particularly the role in the climactic murder. Take into consideration the origin of Mersault’s name.

3. Contrast Mersault's view of society with society's expectations of Mersault.

4. Relate Albert Camus’ philosophy of existentialism to Mersault’s character and his actions in the novel.
