NEWS FROM MRS. HUFNALL'S CLASS January 28, 2002 This six weeks students will be working on decimals and measurement. This week students will use place value and a number line to compare and order decimals. Next, the class will practice reading and writing mixed decimals. Lastly, the students will apply their rounding and estimation skills with decimals to the thousandths place value. Students will test over their mastery of decimal concepts towards the end of next week. In Science, students are continuing their study of weather conditions. They will investigate properties of air, wind speed, and air pressure in class demonstrations and labs. The classes will be learning about the layers of the atmosphere, how the sun affects weather, what makes an air mass, the instruments used to measure weather conditions, and how to read weather maps. Students will be encouraged to watch the weather forecasts and read about them in their newspapers. I appreciate your support in helping your child apply the knowledge and skills they will be hearing about in the classroom. In Social Studies this six weeks the classes will be focusing on the struggles faced by the early Texas settlers as they tried to settle this land called Texas. The class will be reminded of the sights they saw on their trip to the George Ranch earlier this year. The students will discover how the growing unrest in Texas highlighted the differences in culture and religion between settlers from Mexico and the United States. The inability to peacefully resolve differences with Mexican leaders will eventually lead to the Battle of the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto as Texas fights for independence. In addition to their study of Texas history, the students will practice reading circle and line graphs and identifying cause and effect. Activities will include packing their own wagon for the long trip to Texas and participating in an Austin's Colony simulation. Lastly, the class will be reading the novel, A Paradise Called Texas. This story chronicles the journey of a German family as they leave their homeland and make the difficult trip to their new home in Texas. REMINDERS: Progress reports for 4th grade will not be sent out until Thursday this week. Early Dismissal Day is at 12:40 on Tuesday, January 29th. Whisper the words, "decimals, weather, and settlers" in my ear this week for a special treat in appreciation for reading this week's webpage. Don't tell...it's a secret!!!
