Abingdon High School English/Humanities teacher

Course Description: HUMANITIES: In this class students will develop an appreciation for a wide survey of music genres ranging chronologically from classical Bach to many contemporary bands and musical styles. Students will also develop an appreciation for a variety of film genres and their respective directors as well as a working understanding of the many cinematographic techniques used in these films. The goal of this class is to teach students how to learn on their own for the rest of their lives and to be able to research future films and musical performances prior to attending them in order to enjoy the experience more fully and be informed members of humanity. Students will be researching in the library each music genre and film prior to experiencing them. They will learn to write reviews about the films and personal responses to the music selections throughout the course. Students will also write critical papers highlighting the various cinematographic devices used by the directors they are studying. Because these disciplines of the humanities are meant to be experienced and enjoyed, objective test will be focused more on the various elements of the music and various techniques of cinematography rather than the lyrics and themes of the music or the plots of the films. Again, a life-long appreciation of film and music is the objective of this course.
