The Learning Center piloted the first internal consulting skills course January 22-24.The overall goal of this program is to enhance the value that the FMA brings to client projects. This is accomplished through building skills in several key areas such as: questioning, listening, managing expectations, setting boundaries, assessing risk, contracting, and leading change. Through discussion, role plays and case studies, the seminar covers the following topics: How to build rapport with clients and identify appropriate business advisor roles How to effectively “frame” the client’s business problem Questioning and listening techniques when interviewing clients Receiving client feedback Building effective agreements and contracts How to say “no”, and still leave a client with useful options Ongoing expectations of management Implementation and team issues Handling resistance to change Personal business advisor challenge (Videotaped session) The cornerstone of this program is the Consulting Skills Profile, in which participants assess their technical, consulting and business partnering skills. The profile is also given to a mix of internal clients and peers, so that self-perceptions can be compared to others’ perceptions. Here are a few quotes we received from the pilot class participants: My thinking has changed and I see things from a different perspective … and I now have a base from which to empower myself and the tools to do it! Learned how to communicate with people I feel intimidated by…already I can see that I am using the skills. I’m doing better and it’s really benefiting my partners too! It made me appreciate and want to increase the value we bring. After class I went back with a better attitude. It’s not just about learning SPIN and other consulting techniques, I have taken what we learned and applied it to my overall attitude. The class gave me just what I need to fine-tune my own qualities. Without this course I wouldn’t have even tried to handle certain situations at all. It gave me real examples to follow and prepared me. When I came back I had a whole different outlook and had a better idea of how to move forward. I have actually used the skills I learned… I’ve got my feet wet, had a bit of success and so I am now willing to keep trying to improve. The course wasn’t just about the specifics as much as it gave me a new focus.
