Students today are able to use the Internet for researching - to a point. From my experience working with a majority of our students, I discovered they have not been taught how to search efficiently and effectively. They wrongly believe the more "hits", the better; but are unwilling to explore them longer than a few minutes. They need more guidance. Below are samples of some of the webpages I created to give our kids a "jumpstart" for successful researching. First, the teacher and I thoroughly discussed the objective of their research assignment. Then I suggested specific print references that might be appropriate and, if my time allowed, offered to create a customized webpage. (Each webpage required at least 2 hours to make.) When the class came to the library, I presented a mini-lesson complete with a cartful of print material and/or tips for using my webpage. Note: Some students were very skeptical and would not use my page at first. The smart ones are now copying my URL as soon as I show it!
