Olaudah Equiano

Olaudah Equiano lived a sad, yet happy, adventurous and interesting life.  When Olaudah was 11 years old he and his sister were kidnapped by 3 people.  The kidnappers separated his sister from him.  He was sold to a lot of different masters.  One master was a goldsmith and he taught Olaudah how to make gold ornaments.  Another master bought him so he could be a companion for her son. Finally, a Quaker man bought Olaudah and said that he could buy his freedom, so Olaudah started to save money to buy his freedom.  After Olaudah bought his freedom for 40 pounds he became a navigator on one of his friend’s ships.  On one of their trips the ship had a hole in the bottom and water started to leak in.  The captain said to nail the hatch so the water wouldn’t sink the ship.  Olaudah said not to because there were 12 slaves down in the galley, so he waited for the 12 slaves to come up then he nailed the hatch down and saved the slaves’ lives.  However, according to Olaudah the most important event in his life was when he accepted Jesus into his heart.

Olaudah made many contributions to society.  For example, he bought his freedom which was an example to other slaves that they too could be free.  He helped his masters to get lots of money by being obedient and working hard.  God wants us to be kind, loving and obedient even if we are slaves.  Olaudah was a soldier, explorer, an author and an abolitionist.  Olaudah traveled all over the world to places like Turkey, the Americas and around the Mediterranean Sea, fought in the French and Indian War and searched for the Northwest Passage.  Olaudah was also an abolitionist, someone who wants to end slavery, and tried to make Queen Elizabeth end slavery in England.  Finally, Olaudah was an author who wrote his autobiography, The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, Or Gustavus Vassa, The African., at the age of 44.   This book is his most important contribution to society.

In Olaudau’s book, The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, Or Gustavus Vassa, The African., he talked about how hard it was to be a slave because people made him do hard things, he was whipped and beaten, thrown in prison and he was away from his family for a long time.  The book also encouraged other slaves by showing them that they could survive and could one day earn their own freedom.  Finally, Olaudah’s book showed how bad slavery really was and it helped end slavery in England.
