Hello, Parents and Students:

My name is Kate Jacob, and I am teaching the first period Pre-Vocation class this year.  I am the teacher of children with a vision impairment and travel to many schools in Washington County and Bristol, Virginia.  Here at Abingdon High School, I also teach this class, before I begin my travels out to these other schools.

The goal of this prevocational class is to learn more about personal care skills that will help to make our students more independent.  These skills include cleaning, cooking, sewing, laundry, job readiness, current events,  and self-care.

Class syllabus:
Course Title:  Pre-Vocation
Course Instructor:  Kate Jacob
Course Location:  Room 121
Course Description:  The purpose of this course is to learn more about and develop independence in certain personal management skills.  The areas of instruction are: basic cleaning, basic cooking and nutrition, simple sewing and mending, laundry, self-care, and career skills.
The participants in this course also are required to participate in our two class projects.  These projects benefit others in our school community--stocking drinks in the cafeteria two mornings per week and baking and delivering birthday cookies to faculty and staff.
Grading Procedure:  Students will be given a grade based on the level of participation in class each day.  There will be some oral quizzes given on information presented in class.  Practice of new skills is expected for satisfactory completion of this course.  Exams will be performance exams.

Class Expectations:

*  Be respectful:  of your teacher, your classmates, your environment, and yourself.
*  Be prepared for class:  bring paper and a pencil or pen.
*  Be on time: in your seat before the bell rings.
*  Be involved:  participate in each and every activity in class to the best of your ability.

Weekly Instructional Objectives:
First and Second Semester
Mondays and Tuesdays--Help cafeteria ladies by filling the drink coolers
Wednesdays and Thursdays--Talk about kitchen safety and cleanliness. Bake birthday cookies for the faculty and staff. Read the paper for discussion of current events.  Second semester we will begin sewing projects.
Friday--Make a dish or craft just for us

*****  NOTE TO PARENTS:  Students can get their breakfast in the morning and bring it into the classroom before class starts.  It gets them off to a good start, in the event that they did not eat at home.

Also, please feel free to contact me with your questions or concerns about class.
I am at Abingdon High School before school and during first period.  After first period, I travel to other schools, so if I am not at AHS, please leave a message for me and I will return your phone call as soon as possible.  The telephone number at AHS is 739-3200.
