THE MILESTONE NEWS FEBRUARY 7, 2012 Dear Parents, Thank you for being patient with me as I get back into the routine of sending home a Monday note. Here’s some news about this week: This week we will be reading about changes we might have to face in life. Story titles will be: "I Like Where I Am" and "A New House". Our Phonics Take Home Reader title will be "Joyce, Who Hated Noise". Spelling lists will be sent home on Monday of each week. We will have a trial test each Wednesday, and our final test will be on Friday each week. Our spelling words this week are joy, royal, cowboy, enjoy, destroy, loyal, employee, corduroy, noise, moist, broil, spoil, turquoise, joint, foil, one, once, first, annoy and Oklahoma. Please practice the words employee, corduroy and turquoise. They seem to be the words that the students trip up on when testing. I’m also sending a note home concerning our Valentine friendship day on Tuesday, February 14th. Each student will need to make a Valentine box or bring in a decorated bag for their valentines by Tuesday, Feb. 14th. I will also send a list of our students so that valentines can be made out to everyone in our class. WE ARE NOT HAVING A CLASS PARTY. I WILL PROVIDE A SNACK FOR OUR CLASS THAT AFTERNOON! Look at the note for more details. Many children continue to be in need of your help in mastering the addition facts with sums up to 18. Several children are still openly counting on fingers to add. These facts must be mastered and in long term memory so your child will not struggle as we begin subtraction and much harder addition problems in the near future. Facts mastered will require no thinking or counting to determine the sum. We'll have a practice test this week so that you and they can see what the test will be like. I’m looking forward to a great week with your child. Jo Ann Miles
