Welcome to my web page

Hi, I am Jeremy Vande Hei. Today I have arrived in Thailand. I am here because I want to know about the religion, government (leaders), foods, population, language, traditions, and holidays. Thailand is located near Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia, and Myanmar/Burma.

I found out that the major religion in Thailand is Buddhism. A Buddhist monk told me that 95% of the population is Buddhism, 4% percent of the population is musim, and about 1% is christians in Thailand.

Thailand's government is a constitutional monarchy  which consis, of a king the prime minister and two houses of represenitives. Some one said that the prime minister Thaksin Chinnawat is head of the government. In Thailand you have ot be the age og 18 to vote.

In Thailand the staple food is Kao(rice). Some of the popular dishes include pad Thai (pan-fried noodles), satay (barbecued pork or chicken on a stick with peanut sause), kang (any kind of curry), and tom yam (lemon-flavored soup usually with shrimp).

Thailand has a population of 61.2 million and is growing at 0.9percent, when most people live in the cities.

The main language that the poeple in Thailand speak is Central Thai.here are some words in Thai and what they meanin english, wats (temples), tak bhat (scoop rice), sawasdee kraab (hello or good bye), Kao (rice), and Mai Pen Rai ( never mind).

In Thailand, Thai people greet with “wai:” one places the palms of the hands together at chest level with figures extended and bows slightly; women curtsy. A younger person greets first, than the more senior person responds with “wai” in a lower position.

Some of the natural resources in Thailand and what they are used for, Zinc- is one of the most widly used of all metals in industry; Tin- usedto make tin cans; Timber- wood prepared for building; Coal- a mineral widely used as a natural feal; and Lead- used in paints and bullets.

I found out that Thailand's GNP (Gross National Product)is over 2,040. Agriculture employs more than 60 percent of the labor force. How ever, industry employs 20 percentand provides the bulk of Thailand's export earnings. Tin, textiles, fish products, rice, ta pioca, and jewelry are among the most important exports. Thailand is the world's third largest producer tin. The country manufactueres  electtrial applinces, furniture, integrated circuits, carparts, and plastics. Tourisum is an important sorce of revenue for local economies.

People in Thailand mainly travel by rail to get to city to city. My round trip ticket to Thailand and back cost me like $599.00, an I left in May.

Aithough the government uses the Western (Gergorin)calendar, Buddhist holidays are set by the lunar calendar and vary from year to year. Official holidays include New Year's Day; Chinese New Year, Chakri Day (6 Apr.); the King's Birthday (5 Dec; Constitution Day (10 Dec.);andNew Year's Eve.Chakri Day is a public holiday, commemorating King Rama I who was the first of the Chakri kings. On this day, the King gives a religious ceremony pay respects to the deceased rulers at the Royal Chapel; and the predecessors at the Royal Pantheon and lays a wreath at the statue of King Rama 1 at the Memorial Bridge.
