Je Hwan Kim Sports I'm going to write about the washington wizards. I'm going to focus on how they are doing and the games that they play. I'm not going to focus on just one game and write about the game because it would be too short and not much details will be in the article. The most recent news about the washington wizards is that the wizards beat the chicargo bulls 89-83. Michael Jordan scored 29 points and led the wizards to a victory over the bulls. The sources of my story will be the news in the washington post and the games that I will watch on TV. The student will have recent information about the games that are played and the important players like Micheal Jordan. 1/10/02 Yesterday, Wizards beat the clippers 96-88 and Jordan scored 18 points and had ten rebounds and eight assists. This is their fourth straight victory. "I thought we could do better than last year and so far, we've proven that." Jordan said. ------------------------------------------------------------ 18 - 14 record jordan averaging 27 points per game christian lattener/richard hamilton injured almost as many wins so far this year as they had all of last year jeremy wickman ------------------------------------------------------------ I think the controversy would be that Jordan isn't playing as well as he used to. Also, every single newspaper about the wizards has the main topic as Michael Jordan. He has taken the limelight from the other players. He's a great athlete, but it's ridiculous that he plays the entire game. He is not helping the team get better, because he's always out there. Half the team doesn't get to play, so how can they improve their skills or whatever when they never get the chance? I think Jordan gets too much credit and that he's a favored athlete on this team. He's given too much of the benefit of the doubt. Maybe in this story, don't concentrate so much on Jordan, but focus more on the other athletes. Give them some credit. Notice how well they're playing. Jordan would be very good without his teammates so don't leave them out. ---Katherine Marchant ------------------------------------------------------------ Back to editing, Here are some of the wizards players and their records. Courtney Alexander No. 4 Pos: G Hgt: 6-6. Wgt: 205. Age: 24. College: Fresno State. NBA Experience: 1. Outlook: Alexander averaged 17 points in 33.7 minutes per game for the Wizards after being acquired from Dallas in the Juwan Howard trade. But with Jordan back, he probably will have to come off the bench. Kwame Brown No. 5 Pos: F-C Hgt: 6-11. Wgt: 243. Age: 19. High school: Glynn Academy (Ga.). NBA Experience: Rookie. Outlook: The attention that comes with being the first high school player to be taken No. 1 in the draft dissipated when Jordan announced his comeback. The good news: Brown can learn in anonymity. The bad: He faces a huge learning curve. Hubert Davis No. 24 Pos: G Hgt: 6-5. Wgt: 183. Age: 31. College: North Carolina. NBA Experience: 9. Outlook: A career 46 percent shooter, Davis is here to come off the bench and shoot the open jump shots that will inevitably materialize when teams double- and triple-team Jordan. Think Steve Kerr. Richard Hamilton No. 32 Pos: G-F Hgt: 6-7. Wgt: 193. Age: 23. College: Connecticut. NBA Experience: 2. Outlook: The team’s emerging star, Hamilton will have to carry the scoring load while Jordan is resting. He seems up to the task, having averaged 18 points last season, but still must improve his defense. Brendan Haywood No. 3 Pos: C Hgt: 7-0. Wgt: 266. Age: 21. College: North Carolina. NBA Experience: Rookie. Outlook: He dropped to 20th in the draft because he was considered too soft; he already has been traded twice. The Wizards picked him up for Laron Profit, who was cut soon thereafter, and a first-round draft pick. A thumb injury stopped what had been a good preseason. Popeye Jones No. 50 Pos: F Hgt: 6-8. Wgt: 250. Age: 31. College: Murray State. NBA Experience: 8. Outlook: His most important role will be as a mentor to Brown, who will need an experienced shoulder to lean on. Otherwise, he’ll provide rebounds—and fouls—off the bench. Michael Jordan No. 23 Pos: G Hgt: 6-6. Wgt: 216. Age: 38. College: North Carolina. NBA Experience: 13. Outlook: Jordan has impressed in the exhibition season by emphasizing jump shots instead of dunks, but questions about his supporting cast have proven to be valid. If he gets the Wizards to .500—and Doug Collins can keep his cool—the season will be a success. Christian Laettner No. 44 Pos: C-F Hgt: 6-11. Wgt: 245. Age: 32. College: Duke. NBA Experience: 9. Outlook: Showed a propensity for not shooting enough early in the preseason, even when left open as defenses pursued Jordan. That can’t continue. And he has to do better inside. He has not averaged more than 6.7 rebounds since the 1996-97 season. Tyronn Lue No. 10 Pos: G Hgt: 6-0. Wgt: 178. Age: 24. College: Nebraska. NBA Experience: 3. Outlook: This could be Jordan’s biggest gamble. Lue was a seldom-used reserve who got a big free agent contract by shutting down Allen Iverson during the NBA Finals, but has been spotty in an injury-plagued preseason. Hasn’t challenged Whitney for the starting point guard spot. Tyrone Nesby No. 8 Pos: F-G Hgt: 6-6. Wgt: 245. Age: 25. College: Nevada-Las Vegas. NBA Experience: 3. Outlook: The team enigma. One minute he is making a spectacular play; the next he’s making a spectacular turnover. Forget Brown. Nesby will easily be the biggest challenge—or headache—for Collins. Bobby Simmons No. 21 Pos: G-F Hgt: 6-6. Wgt: 235. Age: 21. College: DePaul. NBA Experience: Rookie. Outlook: Jordan likes his shooting touch but with Alexander, Hamilton and Jordan needing big minutes and Davis set to provide scoring punch off the bench, it’s hard to imagine Simmons playing much. Etan Thomas No. 36 Pos: C Hgt: 6-10. Wgt: 260. Age: 23. NBA Experience: Rookie. Outlook: The former first-round pick (12th overall by Dallas) could be the biggest steal of the Juwan Howard trade if he is finally healthy. He sat out last season because of a broken toe. Loy Vaught No. 35 Pos: F-C Hgt: 6-9. Wgt: 240. Age: 34. College: Michigan. NBA Experience: 11. Outlook: The days of averaging 17.5 points (1994-95 with the Clippers) are over, a back injury having robbed a once solid player of much of his talent. But his huge contract makes releasing him problematic. Jahidi White No. 55 Pos: C-F Hgt: 6-9. Wgt: 290. Age: 25. College: Georgetown. NBA Experience: 3. Outlook: White took advantage of his girth to average 7.7 rebounds last season and knows his role well. It would be nice if he could improve upon 57 percent free throw shooting, though. Chris Whitney No. 12 Pos: G Hgt: 6-0. Wgt: 175. Age: 30. NBA Experience: 8. Outlook: Easily won the starting job in preseason by being a calm, steadying influence. He averaged a career-high 4.2 assists last season. Jordan and Hamilton can also be used to bring the ball upcourt. The wizards are good but we will have to see what kind of team washington wizards become when michael jordan leaves the team. would they be like the chicargo bulls or would they keep their rankings? ------------------------------------------------------------ The three sources that I'm going to use are the following. 1. I'm going to try to interview michael jordan's manager or someone who knows about michael jordan. 2. I'm going to watch every wizards game and use that as a source. 3. I'm going to use the washingtonpost to research about all the players in the wizards. the list of questions I will ask is, when is michael jordan going to retire from the wizards again? do you think the washington wizards will compete in the playoffs this season? ( to the fans and people who are interested in basketball) how long does it take for Richard Hamilton to fully recover?(some staff who knows Richard hamilton well) ------------------------------------------------------------ Article Je hwan Kim The Wizards are Back in Action The Washington Wizards are back in action since Michael Jordan is in the team now. The Wizards are now feeling what is like to win because last year, they didn’t win many games. On January 5th, 2002, Michael Jordan beat his former team, the Chicago Bulls scoring the 30,000th point of his career. "I had enough frustration, I guess, if you want to call it that, so I went for it," said Jordan. Last year, by this time, the wizards had only won seven games out of 41 games. But this year, since Michael Jordan’s come back, The wizards won 21 times and lost 20 times. “This is a lot of improvement for the whole team because they now know what it feels like to win,?said John Ledwige who is a big wizard’s fan since Michael Jordan’s come back. Richard Hamilton, who is a key player to the wizards, was unable to play after center Jahidi White fell on his ankle in practice Monday January 7, 2002 aggravating the injury. People Predicted that Hamilton will be out until January 21st. “Though Hamilton has increased the rehabilitation of his partially torn right groin, he is not expected to be back in the lineup until the first week of February,?Coach Doug Collins said on January 21st. Even though Hamilton was not in the play, the wizards managed to beat a lot of teams. Michael Jordan said earlier that the wizards just stink after an early season loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers. On January 24th 2002, the wizards beat the cavaliers 94 to 85. "I just think that we played against some veteran teams that made adjustments and they tried to take me out of scoring situations and force other players to step forward," Jordan said after the game. The wizards are doing fairly well still but people are now asking, “What would the wizards do when Michael Jordan retires again??“The wizards will fall like they did before, and they will lose their confidence in the games that they play when Jordan retires.?Said John Ledwige and his dad Robert Ledwige. In opposition to this statement, Mr. Michael Kim, who has been interested in the Washington wizards for a long time said, “The wizards now know what it’s like to win and they will keep their pace fairly well. On January 28th 2002, Richard Hamilton practiced at his full speed. "I feel comfortable mentally and that's where you get your rhythm," said Hamilton. He is expected to be back this Thursday, January 31st 2002. The wizards have won eight games and lost nine games without Richard Hamilton. Doug Collins, who is the coach of the Washington Wizards expect the team to be much better when Richard Hamilton comes back in action. On Tuesday January 29th 2002, the wizards lost 89-86 to the Detroit Pistons. The comments that the fans have is that Jordan shoots too much and John Ledwige said that Jordan doesn’t pass much and plays basically by him self sometimes and he also said that the reason that the wizards lose is because Jordan doesn’t pass the ball. Mr. Michael Kim said that the reason Jordan doesn’t pass often is because the wizards don’t have a good shooter except for Jordan and he expects that Jordan will pass more when Richards Hamilton comes back in the play. The Richard Hamilton returned on Feburary 1 st when the Washington Wizards are playing against the cavaliers. Alexander is expected to start in place of Hubert Davis, who, after filling in for Hamilton, is sick with a serious infection."If it feels pretty good. hopefully I can go ahead and play the way I was playing," said Hamilton, who was averaging 19.8 points before missing the past 17 games. On Friday, February 1st, the Wizards played against the cavaliers, and with a couple of seconds left in the time clock, Michael Jordan made a two point jump shot that led the wizards to another victory. The wizards fan and the fan of Jordan were very happy and they said that Jordan still rules. On Sunday Feburary 3rd, the Washington Wizards played against Indiana and the wizards won over them by twenty points. Jordan got in a little fight with one of the top Indiana player, Rose. Rose got 2 technical fouls, one in the third quarter and the other with Michael Jordan. "[Jordan] was probably tired of me being in his face," said Rose. ----------------------------------------------------------- I'm going to write about the late buses and I'm going to write about what the students think about late buses and what the drivers think about it. I did the Three interviews and I have it printed out with my outline. ------------------------------------------------------------ I have interviewed a busdriver from Mclean Highschool. I have interviewed a student who rides late buses. I have interviewed an adult whose son rides school buses everytime. ------------------------------------------------------------ Q: Does the bus come at a constant time or does the late bus come later than usual? A: the late buses often come at four but sometimes it comes at four twenty and the latest time it came is atfour thirty. Q: How many times did you miss the late bus because it was either late or early? A: The last time I missed the late bus was on December and I missed the bus because the bus came a bit early and I thought that the bus would come late because it had been coming late for about two times in a row. Q: Is the bus driver kind to drop you off where you usually get off? A: I don't know about that because I always get off at the same place that I get off as the regular bus times. Q: Do you think that we need to have more late bus days? A: I definitely think that we need to have more late buses because I sometimes miss the bus and have to walk home. Q: How often do you want the late buses to come? A:I peronally want the late buses to come everyday but I want the bus to come about three days a week so that I can relax and talk to my friends more after school or ask my teachers about the things that I don't know. Q: Why do you have to take the late bus? A: Because my parents both work and they can't give me a ride home. They say that when I get my license, they will buy me a car. Until then, I have no other transportation. Q: What will you do if you don't have any more late buses to ride? A: I would have to give up all my activities or get a personal driver. ------------------------------------------------------------ I will put the second interview and the Third interview up when I get home. ----------------------------------------------------------- 2nd interview. I have inerviewed an adult, whose son takes the late bus every Wednesdays and Thusdays. Q: Does the late busese come at a conatant time or do they come later than usual sometimes? A: According to my son, his latebus doesn't come at a constant time and sometimes it comes veryearly and leaves without him. Q:How many times did your son miss the bus because it was late or early? A: I think he missed the bus several times during the last two months. On December and November, he missed the bus about three times, he says that the bus came very early but I think that he arrived late to even see the bus. Q: Is the bus driver kind to drop your son off where he wants to get off? A: The bus driver is very kind and she drops my son off right next to the our house. Q: Do you think that we need to have more late bus days? A: I think it would be better if we had more late buses because my son sometimes stays after school to play with other kids and I have to pick him up sometimes. I don't pick him up usually but if I on't have much work to do, I just get our of my office for a rest and pick my son up. Q: How often do you want the late buses to come? A: I don't know really, I want it to come everyday because it would be comfortable for my kids and me. Q: What will you do if your son doesn't have any more late buses to ride? A: I would have to pick my son up about once a week so, my son has to come home early and he won't be able to play with his friends after school as often. ------------------------------------------------------------ 3rd Interview I have interviewed a local bus driver who is driving the late buses. Q: When you drive the bus, do you keep track of the time constantly? A: I can't keep track of time exactly because of traffic lights. Even though I depart to school to pick up the kids at the same time, sometimes I'm a little bit late and sometimes I'm a bit early? Q: Do you wait for the kids when you come early? A: Of course I wait for the kids to arrvie, I wait until about 4:10 when I arrive early. Q: Do the other bus drivers do that too? A: yes, the bus drivers I know always wait for the kids to arrive. Q: Do you know that the kids sometimes miss the bus? A: I know that but I can't do anything about it, I don't leave early usually and almost all the kids are there to ride the bus even though I arrive early. Q: Do you drop off everyone at the place designated or do you drop off people close to their house? A: I obviously don't know where everyone's house is so when the kids tell me to drop them off somewhere that they want to be dropped off, I usually listen to them and I let them get off where they want to be dropped off. Q: Do you think it will be better for you if you operate the late buses more often? A: It would be better for me to operate more late buses because I get to make extra money. Q: What will you do if the county doesn't operate any more late buses? A: I don't think that kind of thing woiuld happen and the students and I will not be happy. Q: Do you feel bad when you find out that the students missed the bus? A: Not really because most of the students get on the bus and the bad boys normally miss the bus. Thank you for your interview. ------------------------------------------------------------ Article 2 "Late bus and their schedules" In Mclean high school, there are a lot of students who does after school activities. A lot of the students who stay after for some reasons such as after school activities or just to play with other kids have to take the late bus in order to get home. Several Students who need to take the late bus to get home miss the bus for some reason. A tenth grade student who had been riding school buses all the time said, "The late buses often come at four but sometimes it comes at four twenty and the latest time it came was at four thirty."
