Second Story: Free music from the Internet

Before the technology was advanced, the consumers of music CDs had no choice but to buy a CD of a person in order to listen to one or more songs they like. Availability of computers and Internet made the music listeners to get the songs they want instead of wasting their money on CDs. Some still prefer to buy the entire CD of a singer, but a lot of people collect the songs they desire from the special programs that find servers and special web sites. The fact that music on the Internet is free encourages more people to download the songs and also create music CDs of their own.
“I usually download music about three to five times per week,” said Hyunsoo Im who is a current student at McLean High School. According to Im, he downloads free music from the Internet. To get the music, Im uses special programs that links him to multiple different servers. After downloading free music, Im creates music CDs with the songs he downloaded whenever he wants to. Im usually gives the CDs he makes or keeps it for himself. Currently he doesn’t make any more CDs due to the fact that his CD creator has broken.
Donghoon Lee is a college student. Lee downloads music from the Internet through the search engines. Lee currently has stopped downloading music, because he thinks that he has enough to handle. Lee also creates music CDs of his own, which he gives them to others as a gift or keeps them for himself. He thinks that it is useful to create one’s own CDs, because “gifting them to someone brings special aptitude.” Aaron Ford is a college student who downloads a lot of music off the Internet daily. Using Kazaa and Morpheous as downloading methods, Ford creates CDs and gives them away or keeps it for himself.
For laws relating to the copyright laws, Lee believes that non-profit generation activity is permitted for personal usage. Ford and Im don’t know the specific laws, but they seem to know the general idea. According to all the interviewees, the downloading of free music was thought to be legal. “It is virtually impossible to enforce such a law,” said Im. Lee looked at the elements of the law and said that it is “legal unless the law says ‘no’.” Ford believes that it would generally be legal unless someone makes money out of it. “Companies don’t mind people getting free music but they do mind people making money out of their music.”
“I don’t believe that free music off the Internet goes against the copyright laws,” said Im. He thinks it is because the distributors of the CD (Manufacturers of the CD) didn’t make the particular songs. Lee said that some of the free music should always be legal such as music for “advertising purposes.” Ford feels that it is necessary to have the free music on the Internet for users to download, because the music listeners should be able “listen to some of the new bands or music and rate them.” Ford said “before buying the CD, it is necessary to listen to some of the songs from the singer.”
Ford, Lee, and Im believe that the case on Napster doesn’t indicate that the free music is illegal, since “it was more of a personal lawsuit between music artists and Napster.” If more people continue download free music from the Internet, the record companies would be likely to lose a big portion of their profit. Im is angry about the fact that the record companies charge a lot of money for music CDs, which will cost less than a few cents to make. He believes that they should lower the price of music CDs “considering the amount of capital put in to make those CDs.” Lee says that the companies would lose some money but wouldn’t go bankrupt since “there are still a lot of people who wants to buy the original copy of a singer.” In contrast, Ford is worrying that the record companies might go bankrupt.
The selling of the CD creators in market indicate that it is not illegal to download free music and create CDs. Im said that the selling of CD creators are legal since “CD-Rs and RWs are mostly for back-up purposes and personal use.” Lee said that even if the creation of music CDs were illegal, it wouldn’t stop the creation of CDs, since there are thousands of CD creators already sold to consumers. “CD creators are not for the copying music,” said Ford. He thinks that it is impossible to stop people from creating CDs.
Lee and Im know how to convert audio files into mp3 files. Lee has stopped doing it since he thinks that it is a waste of time and Im is sometimes doing it to share the files with other users. Lee wanted to show up to people that he had the ability to do so. Im converts the files into mp3, because he likes listening to music through the computer. They both don’t get paid for converting files. All three interviewees think that it is illegal to convert a singer’s music CD into mp3 files to make money.
Ford, Im, and Lee all agreed that there would be some types of free music existing in the future. “Partially because anything on the Internet is just about impossible to censor or block out,” said Im. “But there would be less music downloading, since it is more difficult to find a server, and many record companies are willing to lower their prices on CDs.” Lee said that there would be music in the future no matter whether it’s legal or not. “Music will still exist, because the Internet is huge and it is difficult to find and stop people from giving out their music to others, just like me,” said Ford.

Outline of the second story:

* The second topic that I chose is the "CD making" - burning mp3, movies etc.

The story will be about whether it's legal to download and make one's own CDs and their opinion of making CDs. It will include how often they download and make music CDs, why they download music, and their opinion of free musics. It also will talk about the legality of the free music download sites and where the people download music from.

* The three people I will interview are :
1. My friend (who downloads music and makes CDs for himself).
2. My friend (who downloads music a lot).
3. My cousin (who downloads music and sometimes changes music files to mp3 files).

* The questions for the interviews are:
1. Do you download free music through the internet? If yes, how often do you download the music? If no, why not?
2. Where do you download music? Any sites?
3. Have you ever created a music CD of your own from the music that you downloaded? Did you ever give the CD to someone else or sell it? If yes, tell me about it briefly.
4. Do you know any laws relating to copyright law? If yes, list few.
5. Do you think it is legal or illegal to download free music? why?
6. Shouldn't the downloading of the free music against the copyright law? why or why not? (ex. freedom of press?)
7. What do you think about the case on Napster where the ruling didn't favor Napster, which made them to close? Does it indicate that the free music is illegal?
8. If the downloading of free music was legal, how would the record companies survive?
9. If it was illegal, what does the selling of CD-RWs and blank CDs mean? Would they be prohibited from the market?
10. There are some people who change audio files into mp3 files for the internet users to download. Are you one of them?
11. Do you think they got paid for doing it? Why would they do it? Is it legal or illegal?
12. Do you think that there would be or wouldn't be any more free music on the net in the future? why or why not?

Interview #1 - Hyunsoo Im

1. Do you download free music through the Internet? If yes, how often do you download the music?  If no, why not?
Yes, I download free music off the Internet.  I usually download music about 3 to 5 times per week.

2. Where do you download music? Any sites?
No, I don't go to sites, but rather servers, or I use programs that link me to multiple different servers.

3. Have you ever created a music CD of your own from the music that you Downloaded? Did you ever give the CD to someone else or sell it? If yes, tell me about it briefly.
Yes, I have created music CDs with downloaded songs of mine.  However, I have never sold them because I usually just give them to friends or keep them for myself.  But currently my CD creator drive is broken so I cannot make CDs anymore

4. Do you know any laws relating to copyright law? If yes, list few.
Well, I don't know specific laws, but I am aware of the general idea.

5. Do you think it is legal or illegal to download free music? Why?
I do not think it is Illegal because music off the internet can be used for back-up.  And it is virtually impossible to enforce such a law.

6. Shouldn't the downloading of the free music against the copyright law? Why or why not? (Ex. freedom of press?)
No, I do not believe that free music off the Internet goes agaisnt the copyright laws because the distributors of the CD (Manufacturers of the CD) did not make the particular songs

7. What do you think about the case on Napster where the ruling didn't favor Napster, which made them to close? Does it indicate that the free music is Illegal?
No, it does not indicate that free music is Illegal because it was more of a personal lawsuit between Music artists and Napster.

8. If the downloading of free music was legal, how would the record companies survive?
As far as I am informed, the Record industry is well off with basically a monopoly on sources for music.  It is not that they will lose money, but they will have less capital.  It is widely understood that the creations of CDs hardly take any money at all, and selling a piece of plastic for 15 dollars is simply ludicrous.  The record companies just need to tone down the price for a circular piece of plastic to about 5 dollars, which is a reasonable price considering the amount of resources used to make CDs

9. If it was illegal, what does the selling of CD-RWs and blank CDs mean? Would they be prohibited from the market?
The CD-Rs and RWs are mostly for back-up purposes and personal use

10. There are some people who change audio files into mp3 files for the Internet users to download. Are you one of them?
Yes, I do convert CD files into mp3 files, but not for the intent to share them with other music down loaders.  I simply like to listen to music on my computer, partly because of the higher quality sound system

11. Do you think they got paid for doing it? Why would they do it? Is it Legal or illegal?
Probably not.  Many people mistake this, but the majority of the music downloaders do not download music solely for the money, but rather convenience purposes.  I highly doubt that converting file extensions is Illegal.

12. Do you think that there would be or wouldn't be any more free music on The net in the future? Why or why not?
Most likely, there will always be some ways to download music off the Internet, partially because anything on the Internet is just about impossible to censor, or block out.  But I think that there will be less music downloading possibly because of the increased difficulty to find sites and servers, and mainly because the record companies will most likely reduce their prices on CDs

Interview #2 - Donghoon Lee

1. Do you download free music through the internet? If yes, how often do you download the music? If no, why not?
Yes and No. Yes, often as I could until I have collected enough. No, I have enough to handle.

2. Where do you download music? Any sites?
   Searching engines give me where-abouts.

3. Have you ever created a music CD of your own from the music that you downloaded? Did you ever give the CD to someone else or sell it? If yes, tell me about it briefly.
Yes. Compilations make the quite use of CDs, instead of few good songs out of 15 or more songs. Gifting them to someone brings special aptitude.

4. Do you know any laws relating to copyright law? If yes, list few.
Yes. No profit-generation activity is permitted for personal usage (it may not be true, but that's what I thought I know).

5. Do you think it is legal or illegal to download free music? why?
Legal unless it says so NOT-TO-DO.

6. Shouldn't the downloading of the free music against the copyright law? why or why not? (ex. freedom of press?)
Some free music is permitted by the authors for advertising purposes. Otherwise, distributors might know the consequence of illegal activities.

7. What do you think about the case on Napster where the ruling didn't favor Napster, which made them to close? Does it indicate that the free music is illegal?
Don't think so. It's only the result of who has more power to rule. #6 explains that all free music may not be illegal.

8. If the downloading of free music was legal, how would the record companies survive?
If that case, another question arises. "Will all music be free after all?" I don't think so. Also, "Are they all depending on sales on music?" There are tons of other ways to keep their rights such as broadcasting royalty, touring, character goodies and so forth. If they complain, that means they want more. They may try some other merchandises other than just music then.

9. If it was illegal, what does the selling of CD-RWs and blank CDs mean? Would they be prohibited from the market?
Who knows...:-) "All market-driven," said the marketers; "there are there," said customers. Can someone prohibited the goods from now on? How about ones already sold to millions of people?

10. There are some people who change audio files into mp3 files for the internet users to download. Are you one of them?
I did few times (too time consuming and not public distribution). No more.

11. Do you think they got paid for doing it? Why would they do it? Is it legal or illegal?
Show-ups. First maybe people try to show up to people that the person who has the skill/ability to do so (just like a magician). Maybe someone gets paid; not me.

12. Do you think that there would be or wouldn't be any more free music on the net in the future? why or why not?
There still will be no matter of legal or not. #6 explains.

Interview #3 - Aaron Ford

1. Do you download free music through the internet? If yes, how often do you download the music? If no, why not?
Yes i download music of the internet daily i usually have about 30 tracks downlaoded a day

2. Where do you download music? Any sites?
I use Kazaa And morpheus to download music

3. Have you ever created a music CD of your own from the music that you downloaded?
yes i have made several cds around 30 - 40
Did you ever give the CD to someone else or sell it?
   yes
If yes, tell me about it briefly.
I useaully just download some songs a friend may want and just copy them onto a cd and then just give it to them u dont sell  cds that i make

4. Do you know any laws relating to copyright law? If yes, list few.
ermmmm, I think your suposed to own the orginal cd apart from that no

5. Do you think it is legal or illegal to download free music? why?
Downloading music is legal but distributing it and making profit without liscence is illegal. I think thie is beacuse some company dont mind ppl getting free music but they do mind ppl making money out of there music

6. Shouldn't the downloading of the free music against the copyright law? why or why not? (ex. freedom of press?)
i belive that the downloading of music should be kept legal as it is 1 of the best sources to find out about new bands/music and to be able to listen to them without having to go out and buy a CD also it is useull if ur gonna buy a cd and u want to listen to some of the tracks on it u cAN download them to see if u will like the album or not

7. What do you think about the case on Napster where the ruling didn't favor Napster, which made them to close? Does it indicate that the free music is illegal?
it indicatea that music companies are trying to crack down on the amount of music piracy is going on napster could eb targeted because u downloaded the songs of them
Kazaa and Morpheus however are harder to target as they are FTP programs so they will be targeting them and also the few million people that use it to as the information that is shared is stored on there oc

8. If the downloading of free music was legal, how would the record companies survive?
companies would not survive they would go out of business because they would have no money]
unless the make a way of letting ppl download music but for a price.. but then it wouldnt be 'free'

9. If it was illegal, what does the selling of CD-RWs and blank CDs mean? Would they be prohibited from the market?
Cdrw have many uses apart from copying music and would be untouchable by companies trying to ban piracy

10. There are some people who change audio files into mp3 files for the internet users to download. Are you one of them?
   YESS
i have around 1200 mp3 on my pc i belive if i have it and someone wants it and it dosent do me anydamage then they can have it

11. Do you think they got paid for doing it? Why would they do it? Is it legal or illegal?
ppl who get paid to change audio files to mp3 are illegal and i do not like these kind of ppl they would however be able to make a lot of money

12. Do you think that there would be or wouldn't be any more free music on the net in the future? why or why not?
I belive that music companies will trie there hardest to stop ppl getting free music but basically there will always be ppl who will make music avalible thru the net (like me) and the net is far to expansize for companies to able to check everybody on the net

First Story:

Main News/Economy of the US

Article: Economy of the nation

United States has been in recession after the Sept.11 attack. As a result, the stock market dropped almost to the bottom and some of the businesses went bankrupt. Meanwhile, other businesses gained profits during the period of recession. The recession affected a lot of people both in good and bad ways. While some of the people lost their jobs and had their wages lowered, others enjoyed spending money on low price products. The economy has recovered a little and consumers have regained their confidence back, but it is not as good as it was before. The trend of the stock market and economy are uncertain.

"By shaking consumer confidence and seriously disrupting several businesses, the September 11th attacks had a negative impact on our national economy," said Ms. Scheinman who is currently a Business Law teacher at McLean High School. The United States' economy runs on consumer spending and a downturn in consumer confidence has led to a reduced flow of capital. Also with the partial loss of major competitors in the financial industries, the reduced flow of capital has a ripple effect on several sectors of our economy.

According to Mr. Kim who is a father of a student who is currently attending McLean High School, the stock market is an important figure on our economy. Scheinman and Mr. Lee, who is a college student, agreed with the idea. "Usually, the stock market represents our economy," said Kim. In a recession, a country would most likely have a very low stock market. Therefore the stock market and the economy are directly related.

"The stock market is still low but it seems to be recovering much of the loss it experienced after Sept.11," said Lee. Lee and Scheinman agreed that the stock market trend is good, since they believe that investors will put their money into the market. Meanwhile, Kim disagreed with it and said "the stock market trend does not look great, since economy is still bad." The stock market has been recovering after November but the trend is not certain. They all agreed that the economy would recover whenever the stock market seems to recover. In addition, Lee said that the economy would be much better after the Winter Olympic in Salt Lake City.

"Every individual who works and lives in America is directly affected by the state of the economy," said Scheinman. Kim buys more products than before since a lot of products were on sale. He travels less and the lower price of gasoline benefits him. Lee also spends more money on products. It became harder for Lee to find a job. Scheinman thinks that the economy is bad for all consumers.

Lee and Scheinman knew some people who were affected by the economy in negative ways. "One of my friend was fired from his part time job," said Lee. Several of Scheinman's friends lost their positions at Meryl Lynch when the company lost a substantial portion of its offices (formerly located in The Twin Towers).

Some of the companies made benefits from the bad economy while others suffered losses. "The companies related to production of war weapons such as Rockeed Martin, gained profits from entering into contract with the Department of Defense," said Kim. He believes that the stores with low price such as Wal-Mart has made a lot of money. Lee thinks that the rich consumers have benefited, since they can buy things they desired for cheaper price.

According to Scheinman, "Specifically those companies involved in security benefited from the bad economy." Lee thought of the insurance companies and high-quality product selling businesses as the companies who suffer the most. Answering the same question, "the unemployed, Arabic, victims of Sept.11 suffered the most" replied Kim.

Scheinman said that she would keep her spending habits, which meant that she would not spend or save more. While Lee is planning to spend more on things that are on sale to help him and the economy, Kim is going to "save for a rainy day."

The American economy is tied to many of the world's economies. Other countries are our trading partners who will be directly affected from our economy. Our economy, which is in recession, will give bad effect on other countries. To prevent it, President Bush is doing a good job in restoring and maintaining consumer confidence and our economy. "In my opinion, the president's effort is the best way to get the economy back on track," said Scheinman.

Interview #1 - with Mr. Kim

Jongkuk: How do you think the Sept.11 attack affected our economy?
Mr. Kim: Tourism, hotel related businesses are running low. A lot of products are sold in a very low price. A lot of unemployment. 0.8% of unemployment rate has increased. The nation is most likely to be in a recession.
Jongkuk: Do you think that stock market is an important figure on our economy? How?
Mr. Kim: Yes, usually stock market represents our economy. If economy goes bad, the companies lose their profits, which lessons their stock value. The stock market and the economy are directly related.
Jongkuk: How has the stock market been going on? What is its trend?
Mr. Kim: It was going down before Sept.11. After Sept.11, it dropped to the bottom. From last November, it recovered but stock market trend does not look great, since economy is bad.
Jongkuk: How has the economy been going on? What is its trend?
Mr. Kim: Economy is not as good as it was. Economy will be better but not for a while.
Jongkuk: Are you directly affected to our economy? If yes, how?
Mr. Kim: Yes, I have bought more products than before. Travel less, cheaper gasoline.
Jongkuk: Do you know anyone who's affected by the economy? Any companies?
Mr. Kim: No, but for companies I know that the companies related to production of war efforts, for example, Rockeed Martin, gained profits from entering into contract with the Department of Defense.
Jongkuk: Who do you think has gained the benefit the most? The worst?
Mr. Kim: most - the stores with low prices, companies who make war weapons.
Worst - unemployed, Arabic, victims of Sept.11 attacks.
Jongkuk: Are you planning to save money or spend? Why?
Mr. Kim: Save money for a rainy day.

Interview #2 - with Mr. Lee

Jongkuk: How do you think the Sept.11 attack affected our economy?
Mr. Lee: Many companies are making low profits. Many people rely on insurance. People travel less, buy less, which leads the companies to lower the price of products.
Jongkuk: Do you think that stock market is an important figure on our economy? How?
Mr. Lee: Yes, stock market is one way to look at one's economy. Usually, when the stock market crashes, a country is likely to be in a recession.
Jongkuk: How has the stock market been going on? What is its trend?
Mr. Lee: stock market is still low but it seems to be better than the time of the Sept.11 attacks. It will remain low and quite a while after, it's going to go up.
Jongkuk: When do you think the stock market will go up?
Mr. Lee: It probably will, after the Salt Lake City Olympics. haha
Jongkuk: How has the economy been going on? What is its trend?
Mr. Lee: Economy was falling down before the Sept.11. It is almost same as the stock market's trend.
Jongkuk: Are you directly affected to our economy? If yes, how?]
Mr. Lee: Yes, it became harder for me to find a job. But the low price of the products makes me to spend more.
Jongkuk: Do you know anyone who's affected by the economy? Any companies?
Mr. Lee: My friend. He was fired from his part time job. The profits for the Wal-Mart went high.
Jongkuk: Who do you think has gained the benefit the most? The worst?
Mr. Lee: Most - the consumers (rich people), low-quality product selling businesses.
Worst - insurance companies, high quality product selling businesses.
Jongkuk: Are you planning to save money or spend? Why?
Mr. Lee: Spend. Spend on things that I must buy and if I have some extra money, spend more. It will help the economy to recover faster.
