Damascus Middle School held their First Annual Community Service Project Day? Mrs. Price, along with Mrs. Ferguson, took a group of students to work with four members of the Mt. Roger's Appalachain Trail Club doing AT maintenance. We met at the Town Park and did water testing in the Beaverdam Creek. Water was checked for turbidity, temperature, oxygen and ph balance. Records were made and sent in to the World-Wide Water Testing Organization that runs testing during the months of September and October. Also at the Town Park, we irradicated a patch of Japanese Knotweed (an invasive, non-native plant). We then reloaded our bus and were transported to the Feathercamp site on the Trail. We walked a footbridge and path about one half mile, cutting away downed trees with a cross-bow saw! The students lopped overgrown rhododendron and small tree branches that blocked the AT path. We crossed the road on the Feathercamp side and walked four miles up Iron mountain doing the same. We had intended to work on path erosion by laying logs along the sides of the trail and tapping pegs to hold them, but our time ran out! (Our total distance was four and one half miles!) It was a wonderful experience and our gratitude goes to Ms. Anne Maio for her planning and expertise in leading our way (in more ways than one). We also would like to express our sincere appreciation to Ms. Eaeanor Grasselli, Mt. Roger's Appalachian Trail Club President, for getting with Ms. Maio and two Trail club members who came along to assist, Ms. Harriet and Ms. Marsha.
