Here is a little about me:
This year is my tenth year as a teacher in Washington County. I have taught high school English for 17 years. I completed my undergraduate degree in English at Emory & Henry College and my Master's degree in Administration and Supervision at Radford University. I enjoy writing, reading, and travel. I especially enjoy learning about ways to incorporate the use of technology in the English curriculum.
Supplies for this class
Three-ring binder with notebook paper and dividers
Several No. 2 pencils. Two should be left at school.
Black or blue ink pens. One should be left at school.
Highlighters, any color
Post-it notes, any brand, color, or style. 3” x 3” or notes cut to that size
Index cards (3 ½ x 5), about 50. These may be left at school.
Box of Kleenex
Students will also be required to keep a calendar in notebook; this will be supplied.
Helpful but not required
Pencil-top erasers and/or large eraser.
Colored pencils.
A zipper pouch inserted in notebook for carrying above supplies.
A planner. May be used for all classes.

August 14
We will review the syllabus thoroughly. We will create class rules, answer questions about important items, write information, practice procedures, and complete a writing assignment. Tomorrow we will set up our notebooks.
Friendly Letter Sample
August 15
We will set up our notebooks, we will review by discussing procedures and rules more thoroughly, we will be assigned a textbook, we will see an overview of our textbook, we will play a get-to-know me game.
August 16
We will discuss the back story for A White House Diary (Kennedy assassination, era of civil rights struggle, etc.). We will read the story orally. We will answer discussion questions during the reading. We will write in our notebooks about the difference between a diary and a letter. We will determine the writer's purpose in this memoir. We will define tumultuous, immaculate, and poignant.
August 19
We will review the memoir from Friday, review the vocabulary, and write a letter. We will use the vocabulary in an assignment.
August 20
We will finish our letter. We will review and use vocabulary in sample sentences and by giving examples. We will see an example of a summary, and we will write a summary about this selection tomorrow.
August 21
Write final draft of letter. All letters should be completed today and finished for homework. Writing tips and instruction regarding errors as found in today's assignment will be provided (punctuation rules, capitalization rules, choosing the correct word, sentence and paragraph development, rules for numbers, etc.) Summary was not completed today, so it will be completed tomorrow. Possible pop quiz on the White House Diary tomorrow.
August 22
Homework will be collected. We will write a summary using vocabulary from the White House Diary. The summary should follow recommendations on the Summary Handout. It is due on Monday, August 26.
August 23
We will complete an assessment over White House Diary. Following the test, we will review new vocabulary and read a portion of The Necklace. Don't forget! Summary due on Monday!
August 26
We will read the rest of the short story, "The Necklace" and find applications of situational irony in the story. We will practice vocabulary in a written exercise on page 343. We will identify subject/verbs on page 344.
The summary homework is due today and will be collected.
August 27
We will write answers to review questions about The Necklace. We will review parts of speech and read a non-fiction selection, Silent Spring. We will write a journal entry about something you would like to protect/save (environmental).
August 28
We will finish parts of speech (nouns) review. We will share journal entries. We will read an example of non-fiction, The Washwoman.
August 29
We will write about The Washwoman. We will review vocabulary by identifying nouns. We will define words using context clues. We will have a notebook check.
August 30
We will finish the questions for The Washwoman. We will practice pronouns. We will read The Most Dangerous Game, pg 214.
September 3
We will practice pronouns. We will read "The Most Dangerous Game" (213). We will write about a conflict in our lives. We will discuss the club schedule.
September 4
Today is first Club Day for this year.
We will practice grammar rules (pronouns) and complete a practice in the Grammar Workbook (page 7). We will check and discuss answers to the practice. We will read a portion of the short story (The Most Dangerous Game).
September 5
We will practice grammar rules (adjectives) and complete a practice in the Grammar Workbook (page 10). We will check some of the answers and finish this practice on Friday. We will spend most of the class time reading The Most Dangerous Game. We will discuss examples of conflict.
September 6
We will finish grammar rules practice (for adjectives) and complete an activity for adjectives. We will also finish The Most Dangerous Game. We will review for a Unit Test that will be given on Wednesday, September 11. The test will include grammar rules and all literature we have read: White House Diary (pg 104), The Necklace (pg 332), Silent Spring (167), The Washwoman (pg 26), The Most Dangerous Game (pg 214).
September 9
We will review adjectives in our Grammar Workbooks. We will also review all grammar work completed through Friday which will be on the Unit Test (Wednesday). We will practice vocabulary, literary terms, and answer questions about the selections we have read.
September 10
We will continue test review for Wednesday's Unit Test by reviewing and practicing all vocabulary, by reviewing nouns, adjectives, and pronouns, and by answering questions about the plot for each reading selection. We will write about the topic for Wednesday's essay so we will be well-prepared to write an essay. We will ask questions, clarify things we don't understand, and prepare in other ways for the test tomorrow.
September 11
Unit Test.
September 12
We will begin practice work on verbs. We will complete pg. 14 in the Grammar Workbook. We will see a You Tube video about parts of speech. We will read "The Interlopers" on pg. 270. We will repeat instruction on paragraph development. Tomorrow is a library day.
September 13
Today is an early-release day (Fair Day @ 1:05)
Create an icon for the story we will read next ("The Interlopers"). Pre-reading activities for rest of class today. Reminders: Yesterday's grammar assignment is due today; it will be collected on Monday.
September 16
We will practice grammar rules (transitive and intransitive verbs). We will read a short story, "The Interlopers." For homework, complete the grammar practice.
September 17
We will review the parts of speech prior to our quiz. We will write answers on the quiz. Then we will complete The Interlopers with an activity called Think and Write. All assignments collected for grading.
September 18
We will work in small groups to review parts of speech. We will prepare for a repeat test over parts of speech scheduled for tomorrow. We will also receive Progress Reports.
September 19
We will complete a quiz over parts of speech. We will practice vocabulary by completing Word Maps for new vocabulary for "A Scarlet Ibis."
September 20
We will have an activity today: Debate by government students in Auditorium, 9:20 - 10:15. Discussion and vote following the debate.
September 23
We will define new literary terms (symbol, symbolism, and allegory). We will write and practice grammar rules. We will begin the story "The Scarlet Ibis."
September 24
We will practice grammar rules, sentence structure, and writing rules. We will discuss and find examples of symbolism and allegory. We will discuss Homecoming activities.
September 25
We will practice using words as various parts of speech in sentences. We will improve sentences. We will read and analyze "The Scarlet Ibis." We will participate in a discussion.
September 26
Early Dismissal and Parent Conferences.
We will complete a pre-writing activity for the persuasive essay for "The Scarlet Ibis."
September 27
Club Day
We will play vocabulary BINGO today.
September 30
We will read The Golden Kite, the Silver Wind. We will compare and contrast this story with "The Scarlet Ibis" in an analysis practice. We will review vocabulary from Friday. We will have a quiz on Tuesday.
October 1
We will review vocabulary in three separate practice activities. We will complete the grammar practice in class and at home. Our vocabulary quiz has been rescheduled for Wednesday (following the library orientation class).
October 2
Library Orientation is scheduled for today. Following orientation, we will return to the classroom for the vocabulary quiz.
October 3
We will review vocabulary prior to the vocabulary quiz. We will complete the vocabulary quiz. We will read "Gift of the Magi."
October 4
We will check out library books today. We will also complete a creative activity related to parts of speech review.
Reminder! Bring library books to class on Wednesday.
October 7
We will begin review for our next Unit test (Wednesday).
October 8
We will review for a Unit test (postponed until Thursday) and practice grammar rules.

We will continue test review and practice grammar rules. For homework tonight, complete page 21 in the grammar workbook.
October 10
We will complete the assessment. We will check homework. We will discuss the novel that we will read next.
October 11
We will be reading the novel, Speak. We will set up our Speak folders. We will practice prepositions.
October 14
We will practice identifying prepositions and their objects. We will read from the novel Speak. We will write a description paper of one-two paragraphs describing our room at home, based on the main character's description in the novel. Put this assignment in your Speak folder on Tuesday.
October 15
We will finish basic grammar rules review and practice. We will review vocabulary for the First Marking Period in the novel. We will read from the novel.
October 16
We will complete and check page 23 in workbook. We will review vocabulary for First Marking Period. We will complete a character icon for the protagonist. We will read the novel.
October 17
Early Release today
We will practice vocabulary and prepare for tomorrow's quiz. We will use five discussion questions to guide reading. We will read from the novel and finish The First Marking Period for homework.
October 18
We will have a vocabulary quiz today. We will read from the novel. We will continue to study the character development of the protagonist.
October 21
We will read and discuss the novel. We will begin a Character Map which we will work on as we read tomorrow as well. We will discuss "civil disobedience" from Chapter "First Amendment."
October 22
We will read and discuss the novel. We will add to the Character Map.
October 23
We will read and discuss the novel. We will practice summary. We will see examples of the way to write a good summary. We will write a summary for homework. We will practice grammar rules and begin grammar review.
October 24
We will read and discuss the novel. We will practice summary again today, but this time we will read and summarize multiple chapters and see an analysis of the summary. We will make inferences about the protagonist as well. We will discuss Melinda's reference to her GPA and see a demonstration of how the GPA for students at our school is determined. Those students who did not complete a homework assignment were assigned the same homework for tonight. There will be a grade deduction for this second chance grade.
