Maggie's Manumission

I place the helmet on my head,
And zipper the chaps around my legs.
My boots, they have a heavy tread.
I take the bridle off its peg.

I walk in through the barnyard door,
And open up her stall.
I love grooming Maggie; it's not a chore,
Even though she's 16 hands tall.

I place the saddlepad on her back,
And her saddle on top of that.
Her beautiful coat is sleek and black.
I tighten the girth; she's not too fat.

I hook the lead line underneath her chin,
And bring her into the ring.
Riding Maggie makes me grin.
I feel like an angel with wings.

We start at a slow tired walk,
Then I squeeze her to pick up the pace.
Very soon we join the flock.
I think I'm going to win this race!

Our instructor, Ad, tells us to cool down,
So we bring them back to a halt.
Maggie decides to kick the trowel,
And canters off, it's not my fault.

Now I'm riding through the countryside,
With Maggie at the lead.
It is quite a bumpy ride.
Maggie's a noble steed.

With the wind in my hair, I feel free as a bird.
I can go where I please.
Ad is pursuing closely behind, yelling harsh words.
Now I feel ill at ease.

Maggie finally slows down and stops.
Ad has ended the race.
I know what I did is illegal when Ad is the cop,
But I can't wipe the smile off my face.
