My web page is designed to keep both the student and their parents in the loop of what is happening in the classroom and on campus. Please keep in mind that the web page is only a guide. Your child's agenda planner is the best place to look for up-to-date information regarding homework, tests, and projects. 5A News: ** Open House is Wednesday, September 3rd from 6-7:30. ** IOWA test begins on Wednesday, September 3rd. Please make sure you are getting plenty of sleep and eating a good breakfast with lots of protein and carbohydrates. Math 5A & 5B ~ Workbook pages 5-7 will be covered this week and on Friday we will begin reviewing for the Chapter 1 test. On Thursday (9/4) there will be a vocabulary test for Chapter 1. There are nine words and the students have already made notecards or written the definitions in their notebook or on the review sheet I gave them 2 weeks ago. The chapter 1 test was scheduled for Tuesday September 9th but I will be moving it to Thursday (9/11) to give more time for review. Social Studies 5A & 5B ~ Chapter 1 "Peopling the Western Hemisphere" is being started this week. For the past three weeks we have been discussing review material to get the students ready for the IOWA tests. Now we can officially begin the fun stuff. Definitions from page 40 will be completed this week along with making a foldable to record information from the chapter. In social studies we learn many ways to organize and create useful study aids and to begin note-taking skills that will help us this year and in the future. On Friday the students will complete the review and assess questions from page 45. I will have the students put the answers, in complete sentences, in their notebook. Religion ~ Chapter 2 "The Word of God" begins this week. In this chapter we look at how the Old Testament reveals God's covenant with his people, the New Testament tells of Jesus' works and miracles, and finally how the Bible plays a role in our life as Catholics. Vocabulary/Spelling ~ No vocabulary this week due to a short week and IOWA testing beginning. We will pick up with Unit 3 next week. English ~ The students did a nice job on the writing assessment. They are still in the very long process of being assessed. As you know they are assessed using the 6 traits of writing that can be found in your students SLE folder. Most of the students brough them home 2 weeks ago to show them to you but you can always ask them to see it again. The rubris are set up not to align with letter grades but to be used as a developmental continuum. We as teachers are looking for growth from each individual student. These rubrics also help us to recognize areas that need more teaching and practice time. Reading & Science ~ Please see Mrs. Saller's web page. I have a link at the bottom of this page in "Useful Links."
