Welcome to our first grade Home Page!

Dear parents,
First grade is off to a great start! "Lunch" was our big book in language arts. It was about a little mouse with a BIG appetite! The children did super when recalling the foods he ate! We also discussed the title, author, illustrator and the jobs each were responsible for. They have terrific memories! Our sight word drills went well. Please continue reviewing this at home daily. Beginning this week they will be bringing a reading book home with a log for you to sign. Please keep this until they can read to you fluently. When sent back, we will check their reading skills and send a new book home. Spelling tests will also begin this week. We will take a pre-test on Thursday and the test on Friday. If they get 100% on Thursday, they will not re-take on Friday. Please use the guidelines that were sent home last week on the spelling newsletter.
Math brought us reviewing patterns, counting by 1's, 5's, 10's and addition sentences. They did very well!! We will continue with addition this week.
During social studies we went over our school, class and cafeteria rules. We also talked about respect and how important it is to treat everyone the way you want to be treated. We are patiently awaiting the arrival of our "monarch" butterflies! We should have a butterfly birthday this week and possibly one the week after that. The children keep a very close eye on any changes they see!! Our unit next week will be, "The Very Hungry Caterpillar." This is always a favorite with the children!!
Homework will begin this week. You will find a "homework" sheet in their take-home folder. This will also be posted on Grove Hill's website. Their work will be the same each week until further notice.
