Information on summer internships and academic opportunities will be listed as soon as they are received. Most schools or organizations begin sending information on their summer offerings around the beginning of the year. Examples of last year's summer courses are available in the Counseling Office.

Saint Xavier University Introduction to Financial Markets and Trading is a two-day immersion experience that will take place June 16 and 17, 2014. It is open to academically-talented high school juniors and seniors interested in areas related to business, finance and technology. Students will study the fundamentals of trading in stocks, bonds, futures and other financial instruments. They will use a state-of-the-art financial analytics software, FACTSET, to learn about trading and markets. This hands-on financial trading literacy course will provide understanding of the complex global financial markets to actively construct portfolios. The uses and abuses of financial trading will also be discussed to alert students of the pitfalls that lead to financial crisis. To apply, email Dr. Chishty at chisty@sxu.edu as soon as possible. Include your name, grade level in school, high school name, GPA, academic interests, list of involvement in clubs/activities, and whether you would like to be considered for a scholarship. The first ten qualified students will be accepted for the program.

The Anti-Defamation League, partnering with the Chicago Tribune, is sponsoring a contest for students in grades 7-11 on the theme "how one or more of the five freedoms in the First Amendment personally affects your daily life." Students are invited to create a piece of artwork or compose an essay conveying how one or more of the First Amendment freedoms has affected their daily lives. Saint Xavier University Student Media Summer Camp will be held the weeks of June 23 through June 27 and July 7 through July 11, 2014. The goal of this summer camp is to provide students, who have an interest in the media industry, first-hand experience working in the field. Students participating in the camp will create their own edition of The Xavierite student newspaper and develop an entire day's worth of programming that will air on the student radio station WXAV 88.3FM Chicago and WXAV.com. The American Legion "Boys State" Program is a program of citizenship training. Entitled "A Week That Shapes a Lifetime", this program aims to make its program of training in citizenship effective through creating a wide amount of opportunities for participation. For all practical purposes, Illinois Boys State may be regarded as the 51st state with a constitution, a body of law and practices peculiar to its own. From the point of view of the young citizen, the success of the week's work will be determined very largely by the attitude of the participants toward the program. Bruce Rauner for Governor Summer Internship is for highly motivated and energetic students who would like to learn more about the political process and establish salient connections with people throughout the state. You will have a chance to learn the "ins and outs" of a statewide political campaign while building on valuable communication, critical thinking and organizational skills. For interns who go above and beyond the call, opportunities to work closely with fund raising, communications, event organization and social media management teams are available. Barnard College in Partnership with Columbia University is offering six programs for its' Summer 2014 Program for 10th and 11th grade girls. Illinois Institute of Technology Summer Tech Courses are available this year for high school sophomores, juniors and seniors in two locations, Wheaton and Chicago. The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) is pleased to announce the release of the 2014 SCAD summer programs. At its locations in Atlanta, Hong Kong and Savannah, SCAD offers many opportunities to discover firsthand why it is the university for creative careers. Carnegie Mellon Summer Pre-College Programs is offered to rising juniors and seniors in high school and born between August 9, 1995 and June 29, 1998. These programs will be held from June 28 - August 9, 2014. Carnegie Mellon University, located in Pittsburgh, PA, is recognized for its World Class Arts and Technology Programs. The pre-college programs include Advanced Placement/Early Admission, Architecture, Art and Design, Drama, Music and National High School Game Academy. These programs have rolling admission with notifications beginning in early March of 2014. Tuition varies from program to program and some financial aid is available. New England Center for Investigative Reporting, based at Boston University's College of Communication, is offering a unique investigative Journalism Workshop this summer. If you are interested in journalism or writing, this program would be a perfect fit. Last year, nearly 100 students from 23 states and six countries attended. There are three, two-week workshops that begin on June 30, 2014. During each session, students participate in seminars and work alongside BU faculty and award-winning local and national journalists on investigative stories that could be published on the center's website or in regional and national publications. Students will live on the BU campus and gain hands-on experience in investigative reporting while developing critical thinking and writing skills. Washington University in Saint Louis is announcing its summer scholars program. This program allows high school sophomores, juniors and seniors the opportunity to enroll in two undergraduate courses while living on campus for five weeks and receive college credit. Washington University also offers two summer pre-college programs for students passionate about art or architecture. The Architecture Discovery Program is from July 6-19, 2014. The Portfolio Plus Program runs July 6-26, 2014. These programs will give high school students the opportunity to develop skills that are fundamental to those fields while producing work in a real studio under the guidance of WUSTL faculty. Saint Louis University Adventures in Medicine and Science is offering three summer workshops for outstanding students interested in a medical career. Adventures in Medicine and Science Workshop taking place June 23-27, 2014, provides an overview of anatomy and introduction to careers in the health care field. Physicians and professionals from various medical specialties provide programs in their area of expertise using auditorium presentations hands-on laboratory experiences, group interactions and patient interactions. All students have the opportunity to observe a live surgery during the workshop. Students must be rising juniors or seniors or freshmen in college. Enrollment for this workshop closes April 1, 2014. AIMS Anatomy 101 Workshop is designed for students entering grades 8 - 10. The three-day workshop from July 21-23, 2014, provides introductory anatomical learning through 3-D auditorium presentations. comparative dissections and other hands-on programs. Students will have the chance to interact with health care professionals. If you are interested in science or medicine, the workshop is a great way to sharpen your skills. Sports Medicine and Athletic Training Summer Workshop from July 7 - 9, 2014, is an exciting new workshop where students will learn the roles of the physical therapist and athletic trainer, possible career opportunities, rehab techniques and much more. Illinois State University will be conducting the Minority High School Scholars Actuarial Academy Sunday, July 13 through Friday, July 18, 2014. This program is designed for 20 to 25 African-American, Hispanic-American, or Native-American students who excel in mathematics, enjoy learning, and like to solve problems. This program is intended to help students decide if an actuarial career is a way they can use their mathematical abilities. Students will learn what actuaries do, where they work, what they have in common, and how they can become an actuary. The students who are selected attend free of charge and are also provided a stipend of $175 plus the refund of their $25 deposit. The selection process will begin on April 1, 2014, and will continue until 20 to 25 qualified applicants are accepted. Interested students should complete an application and submit it along with a letter of recommendation from a math teacher or principal and a grade transcript. Illinois State will also be offering the Redbird Risk Management Challenge for rising seniors. This is a fun, exciting, challenging and educational program designed for top high school students who have an interest in careers in business. In the challenge, student-teams assume the roles of senior risk management professonals and are asked to guide their corporation through a mine field of potential disasters. Losses may occur without notice, and may cripple their corporation's ability to carry on operations. Teams compete against one another each endeavoring to claim the title of The Challenge Champion. Quintessential Barrington Internship is looking for interns to join their team for the summer of 2014. If you are interested in a career in media and looking for a rewarding experience at a professional publication, this might be for you. No prior journalism experience is required. You would meet twice a week to discuss and practice different styles and techniques of writing, reporting and editing. University of Nebraska Big Red Summer Academic Camps are a chance for you to explore the UNL campus, meet people from across the country, spend time investigating an interest or potential career and have lots of fun. Southern Illinois University Summer Wings is a week-long aviation camp designed to give interested high school students an opportunity to experience first-hand the thrill of flight. This camp will be held from Sunday, June 15 until Friday, June 20, 2014. Here is your chance to explore a career as a pilot by experiencing ground and flight training. Participants will attend ground school classes, fly university flight training devices and aircraft (weather permitting) and enjoy evening activities on campus. This camp is limited to 8 students. University of Pittsburgh College Prep and Leadership Academy , also known as The Bridge, is a week-long summer program for high school students to help gain a competitive edge in the college application process, get accepted to the college or university of their choice and make the most of their collegiate experience. By spending a week on campus, high school students will have the opportunity to interact with student affairs staff and student leaders from Pitt who will serve as counselors. Summer Institute for the Gifted is offering university prep programs for students who will be 15-18 years old by August 31, 2014. This is a residential program which includes SAT Prep and college tours. A high level of English proficiency in speaking and writing is required of all applicants. Lipscomb University Summer Scholars is a 10-say residential academic program that emphasizes experiential learning and includes visits to Nashville area attractions and activities. Summer Scholars is open to all rising seniors who have scores on the ACT>=24 or SAT>=1090 (CR+M). Summer Scholars get a head start on their college career by earning three hours of college credit and by experiencing a slice of college life before heading off to their full college experience as a freshman. Students can select from six college-level courses. This may also be the most reasonable college credit summer program you will find. Chicago Area Health and Medical Careers Program at the Illinois Institute of Technology is pleased to announce its summer program for students who are currently high school juniors and seniors. This program has been specifically designed to do the following:

    Indiana State University Summer Honors Program will have you thinking outside the books. Choose from interesting courses including aviation, digital electronics, forensic facial reconstruction, history, music and sports injury prevention. requirements include at least a "B" average and a recommendation from a teacher, counselor or principal. The deadline for applications is June 1, 2014. However, please apply as soon as possible. Due to popularity, some seminars may fill and close before the June 1 deadline.     Loyola University of Chicago is offering three different summer scholars programs. Depending on your interest and availability, students are welcome to apply to a one-week non-credit seminar, a three-week college credit institute geared for high school students or a six week college academy.     Pace University Summer Scholars Program is an innovative program that allows exceptional high school students to tackle university courses and get an early experience of college life. The 2014 Summer Scholars Institute will run from July 13th to July 26th at their New York City campus, nestled between City Hall Park and South Street Seaport. Each of their majors provides students with an in-depth and interactive classroom experience which is paired with active exploration of the city such as New York museums, Times Square, Central Park, Chinatown, Little Italy and more.     Gettysburg College Camp Psych is designed to provide a window into how psychological science works. Campers will get hands-on experience that introduces them to research in psychology in a fun, challenging and engaging environment.     Columbia College of Chicago High School Summer Institute offers college level courses that are specifically tailored for high school students interested in exploring and expanding their ideas and skills in the arts and communications.
