Information on summer internships and acadamic opportunities will be listed as soon as they are received.  Most schools or organizations begin sending information on their summer offerings around the beginning of the year.  Examples of last year's summer courses are available in the Counseling Office.

American Cancer Society Summer Research Program is an 8-week program designed for high school students currently in their junior year.  The objective is to introduce students to scientific research and to promote career opportunities.  This program will help students develop their own philosophy in biophysics, biochemistry, immunology and pharmacology, as well as gain an understanding of the impact of cancer.  Selection is based on an essay, academic record and two letters of recommendation.  Students will work under supervision in a cancer research lab.  The program dates are June 25 through August 10.  Please note:  this program does NOT allow absences for vacations, camps or prior commitments.  Selected participants will receive a $2,000 stipend.  Application packets must be postmarked by March 14, 2012 and are available in the Counseling Office.  For more info, contact Tyharrie Hill at 312-279-7392 or ilhsprogram@cancer.org.

Bank of America Charitable Foundation's Student Leaders Program.  Since it's inception in 2004, Bank of America has recognized more than 1,600 high school students as Student Leaders who have exhibited passion for improving their communities.  The program helps students gain a greater understanding of how nonprofits create impact in the community.  There are two components: a summer 2012 eight-week paid summer internship with selected nonprofit organizations; a week-long all-expense paid Student Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C. Boston College Summer Experience Program is a six-week program from June 25-August 3 for students completing their junior year.  Take college courses and earn credit in biology, Communications, Economics, English, Literature, Film, Geology and Geophuysics, History, Languages, Political Science and more.  Each student must enroll in two courses for full college credit.  High School students must live and have meals on campus for a cost of $1,512 for six-weeks.  Tuition costs vary depending on the class but runs approximately $1,740 for 2 credits and $4,116 for 6 credits.  For more information, visit their website or call 617.552.2800or e-mail bce@bc.edu.

Camp Cardiac-Chicago Scholarship and standard applications are now open for Camp Cardiac-Chicago 2012, and we invite your students to apply by visiting http://www.campcardiac.org.  This 1-week summer day camp is open to high school students (including 2012 graduates) ages 15 years and older (as of the start of the camp) interested in exploring careers in medicine.   Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Eastern Illinois University Career Services provides the opportunity for current sophomores and juniors to discover career options through on-line assessments, discussion and guided activities.  Students will explore their values, abilities and interests to find potential college majors, careers and learn about job markets and projected growth through the coming years.  Ultimately, students will leave Career Camp, which runs June 22-24, with an action plan to move toward their career goals.  Registration is open now at http://www.eiu.edu/careers/camp.php.

Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising 3-day Summer Program is offered on 4 different California Campuses.  Create a 3-dimensional design, work on a photo shoot, sketch the nine-head fashion figure.  The programs are taught by FIDM instructors.  Learn more at www.fidm.edu/go/summerprogram.

Minority High School Scholars Actuarial Academy for mathematical and actuarial science careers at Illinois State University is tentatively scheduled for July 8-13, 2012.  This program is designed especially for academically talented African-American, Hispanic and Native American high school students who excel in mathematics, enjoy learning and like to solve complicated problems.  The Minority High School Scholars Actuarial Academy provides, at no cost, on-campus room and board, field trips and career information materials for students selected to attend the program.  Each student also receives a $175 stipend to cover transportation and incidental expenses.  Alumni of this program are eligible for a one-time $300 scholarship upon enrollment in a recognized program of study of actuarial science in a college of their choice, or a one-time $600 scholarship upon enrollment in the actuarial science sequence in the mathematics major at Illinois State University.  For more information, contact Illinois State University at 309.438.7797 or smitche@ilstu.edu.

Illinois State University's College of Business Redbird High School Risk Management Challenge will be held July 15-20, 2012.  This is a program for students entering their senior year in high school and who have at least a 3.2 GPA or an ACT score of 24 or higher.  Twenty seniors will be chosen to work as teammates assuming the roles of senior risk management professionals and and guiding their corporation through a minefield of potential disasters.  The winning team is determined by which corporation generates the most profit by the end of the week.  Students stay in the dorms on the Illinois State campus, allowing them to experience what it is like to live on a college campus.  The program is funded through contributions from COUNTRY Financial and State Farm Insurance Company.  While on campus for the competition, the costs of tuition, room, and meals are covered.  If you meet the participant profile and are up for a challenge, consider applying.  The application deadline is April 20, 2012.  Applications are available in the Counseling Office or visit www.katieschool.org.

Illinois State University's Minority High School Scholars Actuarial Academy is for African American, Latino and Native American high school students who excel in mathematics.  The program runs July 8 through July 13 and has free tuition, free room and board, and free field trips.  Students will need $175 for transportation and incidentals.  Apply immediately because participation is limited to 20-25 qualified applicants.  Priority will be given to current sophomores and juniors.  For more information, contact Illinois State University's Department of Mathematics at 309.438.7797, IllinoisState.edu/Actuary or www.KatieSchool.org/mhssaa.

Loyola University, Chicago Pre-Collegiate Environmental Scholars is designed for sophomores and juniors who want to learn about the 21st century skills needed to become stewards of our environment.  This is a residential, field-learning experience in Woodstock, IL.  Two seminars are offered: July 1-21 and July 22-August 11.  Also offered are a six-week acadamy July 1-August 11 in subjects such as psychology, philosphy and classical studies.  The Math and Science Academy runs July 1-August 11 and covers college level classes in Biology, Chemistry and Pre-Calculus.  Learn more about all of the summer programs at www.LUC.edu/summerscholars.

Mock Trial Academy is a trial advocacy conference where real life trial lawyers and college Mock Trial coaches from around the country instruct high school students in the art of trial advocacy.  The 2012 conference dates and local location have not been decided, but it usually takes place for 10 days in June.  Students spend their days learning about aspects of trial advocacy and implementing these techniques in small groups as they prepare every aspect of the case for trial.  Students learn the principles and the finer points of opening statements, direct examinations, cross examinations, closing arguments, objections, courtroom procedures and trial strategy.  Mock Trial Academy staff will supervise the students while they are on field trips and social events.  During the conference, students will get a glimpse of college life as they stay in dorms, eat in the cafeterial and learn in university classrooms.  Tuition is approximately $2,000.  For information, visit the website at www.mocktrialacademy.com.

Northwestern University, Evanston, IL offers 300 college-credit courses that are offered this summer.  A complete, updated course list is availabel online.  In addition, In Focus Seminars on special topics and careers are offered during June and July including Humanitarianism and Global Justice, Law School and the Legal Profession, Bioethics, Insight into Medicine, and Sustainability and the Economy.  Students can commute or live on campus.  For more information, go to their website at www.northwestern.edu/collegeprep.

Savannah College of Art and Design offers Pre-College: Rising Star, which is a five-week residential program that awards college crdit to rising high school seniors who are ready for a pre-college experrience.  June 23-July 28, 2012.  The Summer Seminars are non-credit workshops designed for rising high school sophomores, juniors and seniors to explore a variety of creative disciplines across the SCAD curriculum.  For more information visit www.scad.edu/summer.

Smithsonian Latino Center Young Ambassadors Program is a national, inderdisciplinary leadership development program for graduating high school seniors.  The mission of the program is to foster the next generation of Latino leaders in the arts, sciences, and humanities via the Smithsonian Institition and its resources.  Up to twenty-four students with an interest in and commitment to the arts, sciences and humanities as it pertains to Latino communities are slected to travel to Washington, D.C. for a week-long seminar at the Smithsonian Institution.  Eligible applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.25, commit to participate in the 1-week training seminar and complete a four-week paid summer internship, and be enrolled full-time in a college or university.  Internship partners in the Chicago area are the National Museum of Mexican Art and the Adler Planetarium.  The application includes two 250 word statements and and two 500 word essays, transcripts and two letters of recommendation.  Information regarding the 2012 program will be online in February at www.latino.si.edu/education or contact the program manager at 202.633.1268.

South Dakota School of Mines & Technology in Rapid City, SD offers a Socket to Me! Computer Camp for girls entering grades 7-10.  Students who are interested in learning more about how computers work, computer programming or careers in computer science and engineering are encouraged to attend.  The fee is $525 and includes camp activities, room, meals and transportation to and from camp activities.  The camp runs June 10-15, 2012.  For information, contact at 605.394.2693 or www.sdsmt.edu/learn/youth.

University of Illinois, Chicago & American Advertising Federation are partnering to offer AdCamp at the University of Illinois Chicago from June 18-29, 2012.  Students explore how their talents can lead to an exciting future in the advertising industry through workshops, client and agency trips, and real-world projects.  Industry sponsors will help teach the sessions and will supply the projects.  Students participating in yearbook, newspaper, speech, theater, design, art, business, creative writing radio and TV would be especially interested in this program.  For more information on the application, course schedules and pricing, visit their website at http://www.aaf.org/adcamp.  Applications are due by April 1, 2012. 

University of Nebraska-Lincoln offers a Career Exploration: Architecture, Landscape Arch & Interior Design June 10-June 16, 2012.  Students who have completed two or more years of their high school education are encouraged to apply.  The fee for the workshop is $585, which includes studio supplies, program fees, meals and lodging.  Each applicant must completely fill out the application form and provide two recommendations from persons other than family members.  In addition a 500 word essay describing your interest architecture, landscape architecture and/or interior design.  Application materials must be received on or before April 6, 2012.  Visit http://architecture.unl.edu/programs/arch/hs_workshop.shtml . 

University of North Dakota's International Aerospace Camp is a full week of aviation adventure! This "college seminar" is similar to attending a week of actual college.  But, what makes this seminar unique is the amount of flight training each student receives.  Your counselors, flight instructors and professors are leaders in aerospace education.  You'll start with the basics of flying, experience new and exciting technology and explore career opportunities in flight, air traffic control, aviation management and unmanned aircraft systems.  This program is open to students entering the 11th or 12th grade.  Each session is limited to 28 students and registration acceptance is based on the date the registration form and deposit are received at UND Aerospace.  The fee of $1,150 includes room and board, all flights and flight instruction, transportation while at camp, activities and tours.  You'll stay in one of UND's residence halls and eat in the student dining hall.  Two sessions are offered: June 17 and July 8.  For more information, contact: www.studentservices.aero.und.edu/AEROCAMP or Ken Polovitz, Assistant Dean and Camp Director at polovitz@aero.und.edu.

University of Notre Dame one and two week summer program experiences.  The Pre-College Programs at the University of Notre Dame offer exceptional student leaders the unique opportunity to experience the life of a otre Dame student.  From life in a residence hall to having access to the same academic, recreational, and spiritual resources as the University's undergrads, you will be challenged to ask quesitons and to question answers.  Check out the opportunities at www.precollege.nd.edu. 

Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts offers a High School Summer Intensive Program from July 8 through July 27, 2012.  The 3-week residency program gives students the chance to immerse themselves in a variety of art fields.  Explore your interests, learn valuable skills, test out a potential colelge major, make new friends and have fun!  For more information, email at arts@vcu.edu or call at 804-VCU-arts.

Walgreens/Jewel-Osco Pharmacy Career Explorers Program is open to students completing their junior or senior year in 2012.  This is an intensive six-week summer program (June 18-July 27) consisting of hands-on activities in which the student functions as a pharmacy technician at various Walgreens or Jewel/Osco pharmacies and a short course in pharmacy-related topics at the Chicago College of Pharmacy.  During this program, students spend 6-8 hours per day, 5 days a week either on campus or at their pharmacy site.  Attendance is mandatory.  Accepted students are required to have a pharmacy technician license to work in a pharmacy.  The application deadline is March 2, 2012.  To receive an application or if you have questions, contact Ms. Cheryl Elder at Midwestern University, Chicago College of Pharmacy Dean's Office by phone 630-971-6417 or email celder@midwestern.edu.
