WELCOME TO MRS. D's KINDERGARTEN CLASS!
PARENT NEWSLETTER - 08.27.10
Dear Parents,
Week two of Kindergarten . . . CHECK! I am amazed at the growth these little guys have made in one short week. We have fallen into our daily routines rather nicely and are growing more and more academic every day. We learned so many cool new things this week . . . and played hard too! Take a look at just a sliver our jam-packed week!
RED WEEK
We're All Ears – our 8th grade buddies came again this week and helped us make those cute Clifford ears the kids wore home today. The big kids read your children a Clifford book and then helped them trace, cut, and staple their wearable ear art! Good times for sure!!
Doghouse Directions – we used a paper doghouse and attached Clifford cutout to practice our position words this week. The kids had so much fun manipulating their dogs to “perform” Mrs. D’s requests . . . they especially liked putting Clifford UNDER the dog house. Oh no!!
Dog Bone Math – the kids used real dog bones and dog bowls to manipulate and solve various addition problems to 10. We also worked on subtraction problems to 5. They got a kick out of playing with the dog treats . . . and the way their eyes lit up when they “figured out” a problem was absolutely priceless!!
Directed Draw – we did a directed draw of a dog this week. If we find the time on Friday we will break out the red paint and turn these into our very own Clifford dogs . . . fingers crossed!!! UPDATE: We managed to make it to painting! They had so much fun and were so engaged. I even took a moment to create color magic . . . otherwise known as color value. The kids mixed a little white with their red to make pink and light pink. They thought it was super cool!
RHYMING
Mrs. O's Disappearing House – ask your child about this one!! We played a game called “Rhyme Away” this week and we made poor Mrs. O’s house go bye-bye!! A picture of a house was drawn on the board (I just couldn’t help but tell them that it was Mrs. Oppezzo’s home). I gave the class a series of sentence clues as to what should be erased from the picture. The items that should be erased always rhymed with the last word in my clue (Don’t forget to mop the FLOOR . . . erase the DOOR). We had a ball with this one!
MORE PLACEMENT ASSESSMENTS
I finished assessing your children this week and will be placing them in academic groups over the
weekend. Children with similar skill sets will be placed in groups of four for daily rotations.
IMPORTANT NOTES
Friday Folders - Please return these folders on Monday. You get to keep your child’s work, but please send anything that you find in the “return to school” pocket back to school in the folder.

Blue Day - mark your calendars for Friday, September 3rd. We will be exploring the color blue all next week and Friday is “Blue Day” . . . please encourage your child to wear BLUE if you can!
