Hollydale School Teacher - Grade 3

Hello Students and Parents!

As you are aware, Blue Track at Hollydale starts their vacation on Friday, March 2. I hope that the vacation is not only an enjoyable one - but also that it is a productive one.

Although I have not given any Intersession Work Packets out for this intersesion there are still a number of good things for your child to do while off track. I'll list a few here:

1.  READ! - Probably the most important thing that you can do with your child while off track is provide them with opportunities to read. Even if the child is doing some reading in Spanish, that's OK. Although reading in English is encouraged, reading in Spanish or English will help them with their reading skills in English.

The main thing is that your child is reading things that are appropriate for their age, that they enjoy and that they are at their reading a book that is not too difficult. Reading with your third grade child is still a good thing to do as well. Switching between you and your child - every sentence or paragraph - is one way of "sharing" the reading with your child.

You don't have to buy books - although they are nice to have - visit the public library as well. Your child may like reading the morning comics or even comic books. Reading comic books that are appropriate for your children is a great way to motivate them to read. Just preview them before you buy them. Way too many of them are way too explicit for 3rd graders.

2.  PRACTICE TIMES TABLES - This vacation is the last chance for your child to get a good, clear shot at learning their times tables. If they do not know them by the end of May they will not be able to get above a "2" in Math on their report card. They are important.

3.  FAMILY TRIPS - There are many educational family trips that you can take with your child. Some are less expensive than others. Some ideas include: museums, zoos as well as cultural centers and events. Keep an eye out in your newspapers for new ideas on these kinds of lacations and pages.
