ENTER (return) KEY |
Registers your input so computer can perform a task.
In a word processing program, it starts a new line |
CAPS LOCK |
If it is on, it types uppercase letters without having to hold down the shift key |
SPACE BAR |
Puts a blank space |
ESC (Escape) KEY |
Quit a task or go back one step |
TAB key
(SHIFT + TAB) |
Cursor jumps several spaces to right (use to indent)
Use with the SHIFT key and it jumps back to left in some programs. |
SHIFT KEYS |
With a letter key - Capitalizes
With number or symbol, it types the top character on the key |
CTRL (Control) KEY |
Used with another key to perform a special task Ex. CTRL + S = Save |
ALT Key |
Assigns another function to a given key
Ex. ALT + U = Underline or ALT makes menu bar active. |
BACKSPACE |
Erases to the left of the cursor |
DELETE |
Erases to the right of the cursor |
ARROW KEYS (also called CURSOR KEYS) |
Cursor shows where you are on the screen.
Moves left, right, up, down |
FUNCTION KEYS
F1-F12 (or sometimes more) |
F1 - F12 -What they do depend on the software program used. Example: F1 = help in some programs |
INSERT KEY |
When on, it inserts information without erasing what is already there. |
Status Lights |
Show whether the Num Lock or Caps Lock features are on or off |
Numeric Keypad |
NUM Lock is ON = use the number keys
NUM Lock = OFF use the keys to move the cursor |
CTRL + ALT + DELETE |
Resets the System |
