SUBJECT: Keyboarding Expectations

Most of the Keyboarding/Word-processing students will accomplish a good grade this grading period.  This grade period we will review keyboarding skills and complete lesson in the Keyboarding Pro typing program. The Gross Words a Minute (GWAM) and Key Strokes Per Minute (KSPM) increases each 3-weeks; your child will need to monitor and repeat lessons to maintain these grades.

The 2nd six-week grading period will include, setting up reports using the Modern Language Association format for written work.  We use the MLA format for all written work here at St. Pius X High School whether it is written using the keyboard, a pen or pencil.  There are certain guides that have to be followed.  We will talk about it, I will demonstrate, they will have a style sheet showing a report using the MLA format style; we will set up and enter many reports. There will be objective tests.  This is a very important part of the class; one they will use often in keyboarding as well as other classes during their years at Pius.

The 3rd six-week grading period will be spent on business correspondence and more reports. Their final will be hands on where the students will demonstrate setting up and enter a report, a letter, a memo, a table and also they will demonstrate their control of the keyboard by controlling their errors and speed.

I’m sure you realize the importance of being able to communicate with the computer.  The more efficiently and accurately you can do this, the easier many tasks are.  I hope you will encourage your child to make the most of the time spent in this class.

If a student is typing at a slow speed, it doesn’t mean they will fail—but they will probably need to spend more time completing assignments.  Their production grade is based on the work completed and turned in, in hard copy—not what is or might be on their disk or in their folders. I am available for the student to work in room 250 by 7:30 a.m. and until 30 minutes after school. Except when I have a department or faculty meeting before school or accompany Reach Out students after school.  I have a week-by-week schedule posted in the hall by the door.

Thank you for the privilege of knowing and working with your child.
