IT is June and the end of our fourth grade year is quickly approaching! Fifth grade is peeking around the corner. Let's do our best to keep on learning as the weather gets warmer.

OUR CLASS ACTIVITIES Reading-Our class has begun to read the tale JENNIFER MURDLEY'S TOAD by Bruce Coville. It is part of his Magic Shop series. We have been working on a variety of skills such as:
-asking and responding to questions
-predicting
-visualizing through sketch to stretch
-decoding new and interesting words.
With this novel and in the upcoming months, we will learn to: clarify, give an opinion, note details, and infer.
Upon our return in April, we will study mysteries using our IMAGINE text book. The stories will have us noting details and inferring to determine the true culprit in committing the crime.
Next we will begin using our inference skills with our class novel: Little House in the Big Woods. Writing- Our time is being spent creating our "Bare Books". Our publication date is June 10, Thursday.
OUr class has studied nouns and verbs. Our new studies will have students identifying pronouns and their use in written work.
Our daily edits have added one new rule:
Our daily edits have us focusing on these rules for the next two weeks:
1. Capitalize the start of each sentence.
2. Use punctuation at the end of a sentence.
3. Capitalize proper nouns.
4. Use commas to separate a list of objects or actions.
5. Use "'s" to show that one noun owns something.
6. ADD "-es" to pluralize nouns that have s, ss, sh, ch, or x as an ending.
7. ADD "-ies" to pluralize nouns that end with a consonant and y, but be sure to drop the y first.
8. Watch the spelling of the following words: they're = they are and their = shows ownership and there. Be careful to choose the correct spelling of "it's" or "its" or "than" versus "then".
9. Here are some connector words: after, although, while, when, whenever, until, because, but, if, and since...Use a comma two separate two sentences joined together by a connector word. (Example: After Mark raked the leaves, he mowed the lawn. )
10. Check the spelling of the homophone: witch and which.
11. Use quotation marks to start and end dialogue.
Math - Unit 9 is the study of percents and fractions. Students will calculate discounts and sales prices. We will also learn decimal multiplication and division.
Science - Our study of matter begins on April 29. We are learning that matter is anything that takes up space and has weight. We are discussing the properties of solids, liquids, and gases.
Social StudiesWe have been learning about the colony of Jamestown. We have introduced two new concepts: cash crop and the House of Burgesses. Next we will look at slavery and the southern colonies. Finally we will look at settlement of New England and Middle ATlantic colonies.
