Marketing Course Descriptions
Introduction to Marketing 8110
Students gain an understanding of the importance of marketing in today’s society. They develop skills related to interpersonal communication, self-presentation, economics, marketing sales, employability, career discovery, and ethical decision-making. This course reinforces mathematics, science, English, and history/social science Standards of Learning (SOL). Computer/technology applications and DECA activities support this course. DECA, the co-curricular student organization, offers opportunities in leadership, community, and competitive events.

Marketing 8120 (Co-op optional)
Marketing is the first year of cooperative training for juniors who have completed Fundamentals of Marketing or Business and Marketing class. Students study one class period in school and participate in on-the-job training experiences for a minimum of 396 hours during the school year. Marketing is keyed to the major objectives of the Virginia SOLs for communication, math, and social sciences. Students will be able to develop social and economic skills in conjunction with competencies in the areas of personal selling, advertising, visual merchandising, physical distribution, purchasing, market planning, and product/service technology which will help them become well-rounded employees. Marketing cooperative jobs allow students to practice the skills developed in the classroom and on the job under the supervision of local employers. Resources for this class include computer programs and simulations, textbooks, study guides for each topic area, handouts, computer-generated tests, and student competency records of tasks performed. If employed, students are graded by the employer from an individual training plan. Other assessments include projects, classroom participation, tests, and exams.

Advanced Marketing 8130 (Co-op optional)

Advanced Marketing is the second year of the marketing cooperative program or continuation of the marketing management program. Senior students who have completed the marketing class will continue on-the-job training with local businesses. This class is keyed to the Virginia SOLs in the competency areas of communication, math, and social sciences. The course provides students with an in-depth view of supervisory and management functions in business operations. Th positions. Resources for this class include computer programs and simulations, textbooks, study guides for each topic area, handouts, computer-generated tests, and student competency records of tasks performed. If employed, students are graded by the employer from an individual training plan. Other assessments include projects, classroom participation, tests, and exams.

Sports, Entertainment, and Recreation Marketing 8175 (Co-op optional)
Students develop skills in the areas of marketing analysis, event marketing, communication, and human relations, along with a thorough understanding of the sports, entertainment, and recreation industry and career options available. Academic skills (mathematics, science, English, and history/social science) related to the content are a part of this course. Computer/technology applications supporting this course are studied. Additional study will be focused on developing a career plan in the sports entertainment, and recreation area. Academic skills (mathematics, science, English, and history/social science) related to the content are a part of this course.

Fashion Marketing 8140 (Co-op optional)
In this specialized course, students gain basic knowledge of the apparel and accessories industry and skills necessary for successful employment in apparel businesses. Students develop general marketing skills necessary for successful employment in fashion marketing, general marketing skills applied to the apparel and accessories industry, and specialized skills unique to fashion marketing. Personal selling, sales promotion, purchasing, physical distribution, market planning, and product/service technology as well as academic skills (mathematics, science, English, and history/social science) related to the content are part of this course. Computer/technology applications supporting this course are studied.

CLASS RULES AND POLICIES
In order to be a student in Marketing I must:
1. Come to class prepared with pen or pencil, and other required materials.
2. Come to class with a willingness to work and learn ( no goofing off or sleeping ).
3. Be in your seat before the bell rings. Tardies will not be tolerated.
4. Keep hands and feet to self.
5. Remain in seat, unless group work is taking place.
6. Speak aloud ONLY when called upon by the teacher and focus on the subject of Marketing during class discussions.
7. Perform classroom tasks and any homework assignments. Follow written and oral instructions.
8. Be honest. Copying work is considered cheating.
9. Follow all AHS and Washington County rules and policies.
10. Exhibit a positive attitude
11. Leave you work/desk area clean.
12. DECA dues $20.00
GRADES ARE ASSIGNED BY A COMBINATION OF EFFORT, IMPROVEMENT, AND PARTICIPATION. WRITTEN GRADES MAY INCLUDE CLASSWORK, HOMEWORK, QUIZZES, TESTS, PROJECTS, AND WRITTEN PAPERS. **DUE TO THE NATURE OF THIS CLASS, ALL WORK IS COMPLETED IN CLASS AND THERE IS RARELY ANY HOMEWORK, HOWEVER, IF STUDENTS ARE ABSENT, IT IS VERY DIFFICULT FOR THEM TO MAKE UP WORK. STUDENTS WHO ARE ABSENT SHOULD CHECK WITH THE INSTRUCTOR IMMEDIATELEY AFTER THEY RETURN FOR A TIME TO USE THE LAB TO MAKE-UP WORK. -
