Welcome to First Grade!

On Valentine's Day, students may bring in Valentines. Students must bring valentines for each member of the class. We will be making Valentine bags in class - so no need to send in a mailbox. Please let me know if you have any questions about this.

We are in need of four bags of small, regular conversation hearts for a Valentine's Day activity. Please let me know if you are able to contribute. Thank you!

We use our white board markers a lot in our classroom and are in need of some new ones. If you are able, please send in two new black white board markers. Expo is the preferred brand because of their durability. Thank you!

Each night we will also be taking home our reading book to practice reading the story we are reading in class. (Please do not go ahead in the book). We will be taking a comprehension test each week based on the skills and events in our story. Reading the story at home will help increase comprehension. In addition, we will have comprehension activities where the students read short selections and complete comprehension activities independently.

Throughout the month we will begin focusing on Long vowel sounds (as in cake), consonant blends (flag, plug, skip), and many new sight words. Practicing these skills with your children will help tremendously, especially if short vowels and previous sight words are still tricky.

Please continue practicing telling time to the hour and half hour as well as counting combinations of pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters to 100 cents. These two concepts tend to be very tricky for first graders and both lend themselves well to at home learning experiences.

Please look over the papers in your child's folder nightly, as this is the best way to keep up with their daily progress.

Please make sure that all students are in complete winter uniforms. Boys must wear belts. Thank you!

Our Room Mothers are Mrs. Hayes and Mrs. Garbett.
